I'm always reluctant to cut up things like this because my perception is often "the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts (or cut up pieces)

Now wood, that is a different story! I agree that some material is just too nice as a whole to be cut up. I could go either way with the slab above. There are some agates with concentric patterns that I leave whole. If they are fractured and it takes away from the pattern then I have no problem offering them up to the pre-form gods! With petrified wood if the cut is across the grain and shows complete rings then it stays, if it's partial rings or with the grain, then off to the trim saw.

I see a landscape, as seen from inside a cave of stalagmites and stalactites.
