Hi all. I think I mentioned at Thanks giving I spent a good part of the day (smoked a lot of cigs ) going through the new gravel my mom had spread beside the driveway. She bought a bag of them from Lowes and I'm gonna have to do the same. There were some great agates in there, and I didn't even know what it was, just filled my pockets with pretty rocks. My tumbler died in day 2 of polish, but these came out great anyway. This is the best of the bunch The agates. I wish you could see the banding better. I'm trying to figure out how to back light them, they are very transparent. I think I have a new love... Agates! cookie

Well I have no idea but I would guess there's hundreds of thousands !! Here's a link for you: csd.unl.edu/agates/agatepage.aspI can't tell you how many hours I've looked at these agates and I never get tired of them!! Thanks,,,,, Tom

You got these from a bag of rocks from Lowes? Was there a brand name on the bag, not that I have a Lowes but if it's not just a local place, others might be able to get it too. Looks like some pretty darn fancy rock for driveway gravel, good job on finding them. HOpe you get a tumbler going again soon Cookie, must be driving you nuts!

Hello Cookie, The bottom photo also shows some flint. Could you please tell us what bag of rocks your mother bought? Pretty please.... yes with sugar on top. ;D
All of them are beautiful!

That's flint? I should have recognised that. It was a lrge, rounded stone that I broke up. I asked my mom about the bag tonight, and she could hardly remember buying it ay Lowes, let alone the brand name. Time to ask Dad, he's more of a detail man I know I'm gonna be looking real close at all the bags before I buy one. cookie

I love agates -- it doesn't seem to go both ways as they are usually so hard and take forever to polish

Those are nice, Cookie! I really like that red one with the banding and a hint of black. I like the weird shape, along with the colors.
Don'tcha just love driveway gravel! Can never tell what kind of little gems you might have until you toss them in the tumbler.
There's a landscaping gravel place on the highway between here and Kerrville that I am always tempted to stop at and see if I can buy a 5 gal bucket of rocks. They have several big piles of different kinds of gravel. I bet there's some neat stuff hidden away in there. Next time I go over there, I might have to stop just to get some rocks to tumble since the weather has been awful and we haven't been able to cut rocks. Either that or I'm gonna have to get out and collect some flint so I can keep the tumblers tumbling!

llana... thank you for the great idea! There are tons of places around here that sell stone and rock and I think I may stop by a few and see what they have to offer. I would think most places would think I was a nut and let me by real cheap? (fingers crossed) lol

Yep, Llana and Harry, that's the way to go. See if they will let you pick and buy by the pound ( like, $1.00 or $2 dollars). They don't have a clue how priceless it is to you and me.
