I accepted a custom job for three pendants. She sent pictures and measurements of the stones, but I didn't count on how damn thick they are and the terrible Indian cuts. If it were Spring, I would have offered to recut them. As it is, I've had to work around some issues, like a thick uneven girdle. I'm still sick, so taking my time. This is the first one- a Mexican purple opal. She wanted simple on this. See how BIG it is? Wow! I used 18 gauge wire and a pattern wire.

I'm getting there. I haven't been so sick in a long time. Because of my compromised immune system, I'm really careful about stuff, but everyone else caught it and I knew I wouldn't be able to dodge it. Oh well.

It was 9mm thick. I just finished number 2. It is a triangle and all the corners take a drop down to the point. But, until you get to the point, it's thick. I think any one who cabs should have to set one of their own stones so they can see what's important.

Agreed. There's nothing worse than try to set a stone, wrapping or smithing, when it has uneven thickness.
