this was another "junk" batch of odds and ends, do overs and filler....they went for at least 3 weeks in 60-90, a week in 220, two weeks in prepolish and one week in Aluminum Oxide. i love the stripey jasper! here is a close up of a garnet my girlfriend brought back from a hiking trip in the Adirondacks this past summer, she has promised to take me back to the spot to do some rockhounding next spring.. and lastly a holiday rock shot, i put lights in my jade plant this year in lieu of an evergreen tree and wire wrapped a few ornaments.. Merry Christmas, everyone and a safe and happy 2005! KD

Hey KD, I also like to let my rocks run a little longer in prepolish, like 10 to 14 days. When you're running hard rocks of the Quartz family, which includes the Agates, the extra time in prepolish is a must. Those are some nice looking "odds and ends" though. Like the Jade plant idea as well.

Nice batch of "junk" KD!! I had a very old, large Jade Plant that I put Christmas lights on several years ago. After the Holidays I took the lights off and a few weeks later the plant started dying! It never recovered and I had it for about 10 years from when I rooted it myself!! Tom

this jade plant is pretty old and pretty gnarley...it's not the first time i've put lights on it....and it's been knocked over and severely de-limbed too. it's trunk is about 3 inches in diameter and stands about 30 inches tall. my mother gave it too me as a house warming gift 20 years ago (it was just a shoot then). i need to repot it this spring, will be a two man job as i can hardly lift it now.
thaks for the nice comments,
KD

Those turned out really great. I think my favourite is that little garnet... small, but it looks so gemmy!

Nice load !! The Garnet is lovely !
Can I ask, I've seen a lot of people refering to PRE-polish - what would that be?
My load is at 220 at the moment and then I've got 400 (is this pre-polish?) and Cerium Oxide to do - is there something else I could do in between to make them come out better?
Thanks

Hey Rose, your 400 grit would be considered the prepolish step. The reason that I said I run my prepolish for 10 to 14 days when I'm running hard rocks like the Quartz and Agates is that the silicon carbide grit breaks down as the rocks grind together. The longer you run, the finer the grit will become. If you ran it long enough, the rocks would come out already polished. With softer rocks, like obsidian or malachite, the grit won't break down so fast so you need to add an additional step. I use 1000 grit silicon carbide. You can also use an aluminum oxide 1000 grit material. Hope this helps to clarify.

Wonderful looking stones! I do love it when they are mix. I find all one type kinda boring... don't get me wrong though, I do like them, but when there are several different stones I love it much better.

Beautiful batch KD, and I love the garnet! What are those orange stones in the top pic next to the white quartz? Those are really pretty, almost look like glass. Great ornamtents, what a neat idea. ;D Merry Christmas!!

Wow , nice rocks KD , good shine . I think I am getting there now too with MORE patience, leaving my rocks longer in 220 grit seems to do the trick.
2 weeks in the round barrel had great effect on the last batch that came out of it, still has to go to polish.
That garnet is a real GEM alright

I love mixed batches you never know what you are going to wind up with. I found a garnet in my last batch, I don't know how I missed it when I mined the sapphire gravel that I got from Montana, because it was about the size that you have. Tami
