Hi all. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. All our plans for getting together with the family got pushed up til tomorrow, so the wife and I spent a nice quiet relaxing Christmas together. It was kinda nice actually. So this afternoon my wife suggested we go rockhounding. Well, she didn't have to twist my arm to agree, so off we went to my favorite local spot, Anderson Dam in Morgan Hill, about 20 min away. I'll post pics of the rocks when I get them cleaned up,but we had a sucessful trip. Here is what it was like on Christmas Day in Calif. okay, now you can put a face with my name Gotta love this place. We may never know what a white Christmas is like, but then why would we want to. Hey Jack, do you folks in New Zealand ever dream of a white Christmas? Or do you go to the beach for Christmas? Ed

Hi Ed ... you lucky dog. White Christmases aren't all they are cracked up to be, I'd rather be collecting rocks in the sunshine like you were than sitting here wishing I could go outside yet knowing I'd freeze my *** off if I do. What kind of rocks do you collect there? Looks like a great place to go to.

Hi Ed,
That looks to be a nice area to spend xmas .
If you take too many rocks away you will create a hole in that dam. You think the authoritieswould object?
Is that a dam for watersupply or hydro electric generation?
No , I am not ever dreaming of a white xmas. It has been cold enough already since mid november. There are pics in the paper of people ski-ing on fresh snow , which is unusual in summer , even here. On xmas day we had almost 24 hours without rain and Wow WAS THAT NICE !!!!!! I think we follow in the footsteps of the northern hemisphere bad summer .
We had most of the kids home for xmas and had a lovely day at home. Only a few hardy souls ventured out onto the beaches around the country. According to a news report , tourists are leaving due to the cold weather haha. Who can possibly want to believe what's written in a newspaper ?
Yes Shorty , one soon gets fed up with that white mess outside . First fall is always great , the rest is a nuisance. And you tell me you get 5 months of that . How on earth do you put up with that year in year out?
Well , my latest batch in burnish should be ready by now. Take care
Jack

Nice to meet ya. Looks like a great place to relax and have a picnic and rock hunt. You are very lucky not to have the white Christmas... it is nice for a day, but after that..., give me the sun and 75!

Hi all. Well, I guess I shouldn't have boasted so much about our great weather, cuz it's stormy and raining today. Oh well, the rocks I collected are outside still, so I'll let the rain wash them off for me. I'm sorry to say I don't think we found any poppy jasper this time, but alot of other solid colored jasper, but until the rocks get cleaned up, it's hard to tell. I'll post pics in a few days. And John, Morgan Hill is one of the few places in the world that poppy jasper is found, and they say most of it is gone now. It's really interesting collecting rocks here. You walk along and suddenly you hit a pocket of jasper, then nothing but serpentine and other softer type rocks, then another pocket of jasper or agate. My wife was off picking up larger rocks to add to the rock wall in the backyard, until she started hearing something rustling around in the bushes, then she decided to help me with the good rocks.

Where in CA is Morgan Hill? Thanks!
BTW, I have not been posting because of traveling and recovering from traveling. White Christmas? Humbug. I saw all I wanted on I-64, where we sat in the car for hours in Indiana last Thursday. Closed highway, couldn't turn around because 18-wheelers were stuck on the off ramp. It took a day and night to get from MO to Columbus OH, involving backtracking to IL from IN and some creative map reading. Whenever I recover from this ordeal I'm gonna take some photos.

Hi all. Puppie, Morgan Hill is about 5-10 miles south of San Jose, which is about 50 miles south of San Francisco. And after hearing your story, I definetly don't need to see a white Christmas. John, I'd probably be right along side of you. There's alot of rocks to be found out there. When it's time to go, I almost have to drag myself back to the truck, and even then, I'm picking up more rocks. Cookie, I'm not a nice man. I'm a nice older Hippie. Hell, I'm still wonderin' when I'm gonna become an adult!

Ed, you jinxed us, what did we have after Christmas, 10 days of straight rain! My son got a remote controlled airplane for Christmas, we didn't get out until New Year's day to try it out.
How are you hanging with the latest storms rolling through (noticed the creek off the main street by your place)? Yesterday, up in the hills, we had the power lost several times for a few seconds, probably tree branch shorting the lines. Just enough to cause all the clocks to re-set themselves. Then late last night, the water went out when the generators failed to start. Then this morning, the power was out. The kids were so bummed - no TV. The power comes back and no water, then I was bummed because no coffee.
Please no more sunny day pics!

Hey Cal. Yea, I did a number on us huh? Oh well, the way I look at it is with all this rain, there will be a lot of new rocks being exposed by run-off. I don't worry much about the creek across the street as I think the water dept contols the flow. It's been near the top but never over. And as far as the power goes, well, that's the price of living in the mountains. It WILL stop raining, someday! Ed ps. It was a beautiful Christmas though.
