Good evening all , I haven't posted too many pictures lately, still no 600 grit from my supplier. But lo and behold , I am quite happy with the results of the latest batch of tumbled beach rocks. They have been for 12 days in 220 grit . Another batch that I removed from 220 grit today , was there for 16 days ( in the 4,5 pound Lortone tumbler) and already has a good shine after soapwash and drying . I think that they will turn out even better. This proves to me that PATIENCE is the most important part of our operation. the first foto was in bright sunlight and too much light got into it next is slightly dimmer light a day later after burnishing the biggest rock in this batch, a type of schist a mudstone with petrified wormcasts not sure what this one is , but it is pretty and some of the hydrogrossular garnets these two saphires have been in 220 grit and here is a piece of the petwood found on our farm and lastly a mudstone rock brought to me by a boy from Balclutha. I used equipment of Charley Powell as I had no 600 grit. Thanks for looking enjoy Jack

The sapphires have a ways to go, but the rest - wow. If you get that good a shine from 220, then you better have a welding mask on when you pull them out of polish.

Jack. You are in lapidary heaven! I love the petrified wood! Do you ever run across any opalized petrified wood with your finds? When I was in Oregon, we would get hearts of opalized petrified wood. That facets really well. Beautiful stuff, what you gonna do with it all?

Wow, those look great for just being in 220! You've got some really great looking rocks there, love the pet wood and the mudstone. And your "I don't know" rock, I think that's the prettiest of all, love the swirls and colors. Thanks for taking pics for us.
Cher PS ... Love the green leaves too *smile* can't wait until mine come back!

Like Doc said you live in a rockhounds heaven! You've done a great job on the rocks Jack and you hit the nail on the head with the word "patience". This false idea of 7 days to rough just doesn't "cut it"! Thanks,,,, Tom

Thank you all for your kind comments , but I do have to put the record straight. The fotos above are from rocks that have been polished , except for the 2 saphires which have had 220 grit. I will post a pic of the batch that came out of 220 grit , but not now as I am getting ready to show my daughter and 9.5 month old grandson some of the beaches where I do my rockhounding. She is over from Maleysia where her husband has gotten himself a flying job with Asia Airlines. Rocknames are learned from pictures in books and from other rockhound club members. And I still don't know them all haha.
Take care
Jack

Evening Jack,
The chunk in picture number 8 of petrified wood is the one for me. Superb shine - nice image too with it catching the sunlight like that.
I always liked petrified wood personally - as I have a small fossil collection with a few polished slices - but nothing of that size.
Great work if you ask me - thanks for posting the images.

Hi All , had a great day out today with my daughter and grandson. Saw a group of sealions and walked over rocky surface at that beach. picked up just a few rocks......just could not help myself .
Travelled to cathedral cave and enjoyed the bush and beach walk and into the cave which is accessible only at low tide. Had lunch near McLean waterfalls and another great walk there. Wow , we were so lucky with the weather. It was warm for a change and we enjoyed that thoroughly. On the way to petrified forest it started to rain, so we headed for home. Just as well as we got home by 4 pm in time for my daughter to prepare a meal which she had promised to do. And a very nice meal it was too !!! Andy .. no I haven't seen any opalised wood from our region. The three pics are from the same piece of petwood. My friend Charlie Powell has made a polish pad of felt and plywood in vertical position. Next time I go to him I will take some pics .We used tin oxide . There are still a few dull patches on the petwood and We feel that it needs a bit more 600 grit to do it justice. He has also got a flat steel disk in horizontal position that works a bit like a potters wheel .
