I made a silly mistake recently I thought I would share. Humbling, but may help others.
Living in Missouri we had a warm day so I got the bug to start doing some rock work after what seemed like a long cold winter, so I trimmed and dopped a dozen or more stones planning on starting to work them the next day.
I just left them in the car overnight planning to get to them the next day, but as I said I live in Missouri. That night it went to 2 degrees.
When I went to work the stones I found they had all frozen and the stones just fell off of the dop sticks.
Lesson learned.

Same thing happens to me. Everything I dop before it gets cold, I have to redop.

So, for future reference when encountering a particularly stubborn dopped stone that refuses to come loose: - in winter, drive it to Missouri and park it overnight on the front seat - in summer, drive it to Tucson and park it anywhere for 15 minutes (but don't leave it on your seat) Lapidary can be such an expensive hobby - the fuel cost alone - but you get to see a lot of the world

Isn't that awfully cold for Missouri?

Well... The only "popping" I can admit to doing is popping flat on my bed following a grandkids "babysitting" session...
But, you just gave me an idea! I could leave the grandkids Popsicles out in the car these cold frozen night's! Only 14 days (and a cornflake) until Official Spring! I start that count Every October First! 🌡️(Thermo Meter)

Oh, these stupid spell correcting things! Dopping should be instead of "popping..."

Maybe the lesson (hack) is to use your freezer when you are done cabbing, for an easy removal of the dop? Thanks for a great story.

To stop or at least slow down stones falling off dops mix a bit of flake shellac (from the hardware or paint store) with alcohol spirit, paint a bit on the stone before dopping it, it really will stick and stay stuck. I don't do it unless I am having trouble with a stone falling off as it actually makes it a bit tricky to get them off. We don't have those sort of temperatures in Australia though, I honestly can't even imagine what it would be like to be that cold.

You take a breath and your nose hairs freeze. Snow makes a crunching sound when you step on it, but it's easier to drive on than warm snow because it's kind of grippy.

Isn't that awfully cold for Missouri? Cold, but not unheard of. It wasn't even the coldest on record for that day.
Missouri is a state of extremes I suppose like many states may be. We can be over 100 in August and below zero in February. Sometimes big changes in 24 hours.
