I am SOOOO excited that in September I will be meeting up with my sister in Sedona for a week's vaca! I will be surrounded by ROCKS!! (I am rock starved, having moved to the ONE state with NO ROCKS - but I am so in love with Florida living, I am dealing okay!) So, as to this trip, I don't envision us venturing much farther than the most achievable trail - aka a sidewalk - since my sis has some mobility issues. Granted, I could just park her somewhere and go about my rockhounding business. But I can't/won't do any climbing either. That being said, any suggestions on potential foot scuffing collecting would be appreciated. We fly into and drive up from Phoenix. We will be driving up to the Grand Canyon one day, and over to Jerome another, and I just HAVE to go stand on a corner, in Winslow, AZ ! Thanks, y'all!

In all honesty, can't really help you with rocks in northern AZ other than going to Dobell's and picking up pet wood. It's just outside of Holbrook. Maybe hummingbirdstones can give you more insight.

If you go from Jerome towards Prescott up on top of the ridge you can find red jasper and some times along the road from Jerome you can find some chrysocolla and Turquoise but places to park are rare. depending what roads you take to Grand Canyon you can find different kinds of pet wood as well as different rhyolite and jasper.

Wish I could help you out, but I have never seen anything other than red rocks in Sedona. Of course, I've never gone to Sedona to go rock collecting, so that may be why. There probably would be some interesting stuff on the trails to the vortex(es), but I don't think they will be very wheelchair friendly.
I personally love going to Jerome to go kicking around all the shops. Be aware that the streets and sidewalks are very narrow and some are extremely steep. It is on top of a mountain. The views are great and there is a rock shop there, but I don't think it's very big. It's been a long time since I've been in there. Go to the Haunted Hamburger for lunch. Excellent burgers!
Basically anywhere to can pull off the road and look around a bit you might find something interesting.

Enjoy Ed Hi Ed, I had to answer you first, as I have been through AZ long ago, and really looking forward to spending time there vs. passing through. I think you are referring to the elevation change? Yeah, it will be fun to be higher than 15 ft above sea level again! LOL!

AHA! I was doing a GOOGLE earth search of the roads and elevations around Jerome wondering about that! Mingus Mt. in particular, as I had seen a picnic area and a lake recreation area. So I will stop up there and look around, many thanks!

Thank you hummgingbirdstones, we definitely will be checking out all the shops. And I did read about the gem and mineral shop there somewhere also (oh, and as to mobility, she isn't in a chair TG, but is not much on longevity on her feet or uneven ground. I will warn her about steep sidewalks. I remember the stretch that was for my achilles tendon after living down here in Flat Florida for a few years!!)

HiYa Yes i'm referring to elevation of the physical kind although I understand that pot is legal in the zone for medical use only I did reside in Florida for a time which I enjoyed...mostly being from Arizona whenever I drove over a speed bump in FL. I'd say-- my ears popped amazing the geological difference!

Hi Mohs, Oh! I forgot about the ear popping! Previous to Florida, I lived in Central NY and in the hills south of Syracuse, my ears popped every day climbing back up to town on those country roads. However, years before that I lived in Portland, OR and to me everything back East was a hill after being near the likes of Mt. Hood. I think I will need to bring a good supply of Big Red
