I'm in the process of making a slab saw with either an 18 or 20" blade. I know the rated RPM for an 18" blade is anywhere from 600-1200, and a 20" is 550-1100, but here's where I get lost...I have about a dozen motors in a variety of sizes, but I don't understand enough about them to know which motor would work best for my needs...ARGHHH!! These are my options...

Rockwell 1/2 hp, 1725 rpm, 115 v, 9.8 amps
Leeson 1/3 hp, 1725/1425 rpm, 208/230 v, 1.5/2 FLA (amps?)
Master 1/2 hp, 3450 rpm, 115/230 v, 7 amps
Baldor 1/2 hp, 3450 rpm, 115/230 v
Century 1/2 hp, 1725 rpm, 115/230 v, 7 amps
B Bearing 1 1/4 hp, 3450 rpm, 115 v, 14 amps
Craftsman 1 hp, 3450 rpm, 115 v, 14.0 amps
A. O. Smith 3/4 hp, 1725 rpm, 230 v, 5.1 amps
A. O. Smith 3/4 hp, 1725 rpm, 115/230 v, 10.5/5.2 amps
Dayton 1/3 hp, 1725 rpm, 115 v, 5.9 amps
G. E. 1/2 hp 1725 rpm, 110/220 v
1/2 hp, 860 rpm, 110 v
Any advice as to which motor would be the one to use would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

There's a lot of drag on the edge of a saw blade when cutting a large rock, it's like a big disc brake, the 1 1/4 HP might do it but probably best to wait and hear from people with that size saw.
To get to 1000 RPM from your 3450RPM will require a smallish (eg 3inch) pulley on the motor driving a largish (eg 6 inch) pulley on the saw, you will get a mechanical advantage with this setup actually giving you a bit more torque at the saw blade, there are plenty of pulley calculators available on the internet so start with what you can scrounge for your large (expensive) pulley and work backwards to a cheaper to buy small pulley. If you have to buy both then just put a nominal size in.

3/4 or 1 hp with 1725 rpm would be best, capacitor start would be a plus, especially if you are restarting the motor in the middle of a cut. Some motors you can reverse directions on, if you need to reverse direction you usually need to interchange the red and black wires inside the connection box. I wouldnt bother with anything that is 3450 rpm as it lacks the torque to keep going into the cut and usually burns out prematurely. If you have the capability to run it on 220v it will be cheaper to run and will work better.

When I need to find a motor for my saws, I check what the manufacturer uses or if they are no longer in business, I check other manufacturers. Highland Park 18" comes with a 1hp 110V. I used a 1.5hp 3450 rpm motor in my 24".

I believe that the torque of the 3450 rpm motor is not an issue because I am relieving that torque with pulleys to reduce the speed of the blade to the specified RPM. I din't replace the large pulley, I replaced the small pulley. It was a 4" pulley on the motor. I replaced it with a 2" pulley, effectively halving the speed and doubling the torque. My 24" runs fine and the motor stays cool. I am not an Engineer, so I am open to input from anyone who knows more than I do. I really would like to know if what I did is right.

Either of the AO Smith 3/4HP motors is good. If you have 220V in your shop I would consider the 220V motor.
As far as blade speed I use this chart and tend towards the faster end of it with sintered, if you keep the feed at 1" every 6-8 minutes and are aligned right it will give you nice flat cuts with shallow saw marks that are easy to clean up.

I have a 1/2 HP on my 14 inch. It is dual capacitor start and runs so smooth and has such an easy start up. You will want 1725 RPM. For that size blade you are going to want 3/4 HP min. As for torque, even by reducing the RPM with pullies, the motor shaft is still spinning at the higher speed, it will suffer on startup and you may have belt slippage as it comes up to speed.

I can't tell if thats some Gneiss Schist, or that Schist is Gneiss. All I know is don't take it for Granite
