What about the Virgin Valley opal? I found some wood and even a pine cone from the Royal Peacock mine that had opalized.

I thought of another one. Fossilized ivory such as mammoth tusk. My buddy has a fossilized oosik that might be ivory. He says he'll club his daughters boyfriends with it if they bring the girls home too late.

I have seen some stromatolite that worked up nicely. Add in turitella agate.

OK, here are a few... Echo Mt. Stone (pyroclastic wood cast, Modoc County, California)
fossil fish (Green River Formation, Wyoming)
fossil horsetail reed (Mitchell, Oregon)
prehistoric horse tooth (Bone Valley, Florida - last one polished cross section)
fossil leaves (Mitchell, Oregon)
petrified Metasequoia cone (Hell Creek Formation, South Dakota)
petrified sycamore wood with distinctive cambium (Post, Oregon); sycamore cabs (Post, Oregon; Sweet Home, Oregon)Not sure whether this qualifies, but hard as rock with a few stray hairs and once considered a precious gem. Maybe a fossil-in-the-making... bezoar stone

Gotta get me some amber - saw an ant in the house this morning that might be better off immortalized in stone

I would think a picture of me covered in skitters when rockhounding might qualify as "bugs on a fossil".

These also polish up nicely for gems... fossil enchinoderm (urchins and starfish) from Baja California

Inspired by the articles 1dave posted on the Silver Reef, I went searching a couple of months ago for metal-replaced wood. Nothing from the Silver Reef formation, but I did find conifer wood replaced by silver and copper from northern New Mexico. Heavy stuff. Not going to cut the pieces I bought, but though some of it is fragile, other parts are solid metal and might be gem-worthy...

Nice fire in the opal. Always been one of my favorite stones.
