Do you ever dig down in spots where you find these on the surface?

Yes, that does look wet. Easier to spot the potentially good rocks, but I can imagine getting stuck could be a nightmare.

Do you ever dig down in spots where you find these on the surface? Sometimes I do depending on what the stone looks like that I find. I keep hoping that the rest of it will be there but it hasn't happened yet. Maybe someday. It's been too muddy to do that effectively lately.

Yep this time of year it's mostly parking on the highway and doing a lot of pasture walking to the rock beds. Some are close but we usually try to get out and hoof it hoping that not a lot of people do the same thing- even though I'm pretty sure they do. I'm convinced that finding Fairburns is all about persistence and luck, with a tiny bit of knowing what to look for thrown in. But I've been picking up stuff for cabbing and tumbling so I find lots of good rocks. Too many in fact.

Wonder if you look at a satellite map if you would get a better idea of where to dig.

Wonder if you look at a satellite map if you would get a better idea of where to dig. That's not a bad idea. We've spent time on google earth looking for different spots with beds but I still haven't got it all figured out. You can find them on flats, hillsides, washouts- just about anywhere. I have found several with just parts sticking up out of the ground showing a little bit of pattern so I'm sure they are under the surface as well. Just need to figure out where. This summer there's a rock show in Hermosa, South Dakota the first week of June and we're planning on hitting that and then heading out for some Tee Pee Canyon Agates. From what I've read you pretty much need to spend the day cracking rocks to find those, but I'm wondering if digging would work there as well... I have a lot more to learn, that's for sure.

Yeah, that look like a cold muddy mess, but I see lots of rocks. Muddy, yes, but it actually wasn't too cold, I think it was sunny and in the 50's- I'm embarrassed to say I've been out in colder weather! SO many rocks. Here's what we do... Set the backpack down, walk around, hunched over, spray bottle in hand, screwdriver in pocket. Look through thousands of rocks. Oh, there's an interesting rock/piece of wood. Pick it up, spray the mud off. Hmmm, that might cut/tumble nice, I'd better throw it in my backpack. Hey, that spot on the side of the hill looks great. See another rock, reach down to pick it up and get jabbed by a cactus. Spray it off and throw it on the ground. Slip in the mud. Repeat the above all day long and lug a heavy backpack back to the vehicle. I love it.

I'm going with option number 2. Probably why I fit right in with the rest of you people!

Beautiful place. Thanks for sharing. One nice rock, being with family and getting out on the prairie is a day well spent.
