Posted this one a while back, it's been in the rotary for weeks in the coarse stage. I realize I'll never get it smooth with the huge pits and several people have said to face polish it. However, I don't have the equipment to do that so I've decided to sacrifice it to my tile saw. Wish me luck and thanks for looking!

Moral of the story . . . whack ‘em early.
Saves time and the wasted effort.

Moral of the story . . . whack ‘em early. Saves time and the wasted effort. I'm still early in the game, thinking that every rock has potential if I tumble it long enough... But I think I'm slowly learning that moral.

Ok I cut it. Found fairburn patterns inside, the jury is still out on if it was impatient or smarter. Now I'm trying to decide if I should cut it more and make several cabs. I think it's thick enough I just don't want it to fracture and not have anything. Anyway here is a couple of pics.

Nice patterns. I think you did the right thing by cutting.

Thanks Still pretty unsure about what I do sometimes in this hobby but I think so too. We'll see what happens next. 😁

One thing I've learned at my age and that's the fact that things rarely go as planned until a person gets experienced. But so far I'm loving everything I've tried- I've only really been this much into rocks for about a year. I have a long way to go. 😁

For me it has been an on and off experience since the early 1970's. Much more on recently.

Got a chance to cut this up last night. Here's what I ended up with I was hoping to get 6 cabs . From left to right the first one is tiny, the second one had too many soft spots, and here's a picture of the third. It actually got better, I'm pretty excited about it. It's still too high but I'll get it. We'll see how the rest go.

Why do you say too high? How high is it?

Why do you say too high? How high is it? I didn't measure it and it's at home, but I'm guessing a little over 1/4 of an inch. I think it just might need sloped a little more I'll have to take a fresh look at it again.

1/4" at highest point should be fine, depending on what you want final result to be. A high domed cab.

Well, I got 5 out of the 6 I'd hoped for. They're not perfect or polished yet but I thought I'd show them anyway. Besides, by the time I get them polished everyone will have forgotten about them! I'll call them "cabs" but it's hard to get them perfect with a dremel. The group and the remaining three individuals...

Just know that there is at least one more person out there (me), who is still much further behind the learning curve.

Those are going to look real purty when you're finished with them.

Those are going to look real purty when you're finished with them. Thanks I hope so. I usually only need to put these in coarse in the rotary for about a week before I move them on. We'll see!
