Maybe. No, not from shoveling snow all morning. I had these two slabs that I cut, the one on the right wanted to be a heart. But I'm finding that the brown stripes that I liked when I decided to slab it are in reality super soft. I may end up with a white heart, though, if there's anything left. Wish me luck!

Good luck! Don't really see the failure, either, although you almost gave me heart failure with that subject line.

Those bands of soft material may just run too deep, I'm afraid of it breaking when I'm grinding them down. But it's ok, it's all part of the learning process I guess. I'm learning that just because I like the way a stone looks doesn't mean it's going to be a good one to work with. But we'll see- I'm not giving up yet!

You know you could stabilize the soft spots with some Hxtal. That's a really cool looking heart and it would be a shame if it broke. You just mix a tiny bit up, spread it over the soft spots and let it sit for a week. It will soak into the soft parts even without vacuuming it. If you have something to pull a vacuum on it, it will help, but you really don't need to.

I don't know anything about Hxtal and I from the posts I've seen here I was under the impression that you needed a vacuum. I'll have to decide. I did grind out a lot of the brown patterns in trying to make the back flat and I really like the plain white that it left. Decisions, decisions...

I don’t see a failure, maybe a change of plans. Good luck!

Working at a 90 degree angle across the bands might help the undercutting ?

Working at a 90 degree angle across the bands might help the undercutting ? Maybe. I think it's going to be pretty thin if it survives, but that's ok. Most of the stuff I've made with the dremel is a bit too high anyway.
