You might try taking the picture with the camera farther away from the stones. Then crop the photo to enlarge the image.

This one also looks blurred. Not enough light giving you a longer exposure time (slower shutter speed) can cause this. For best shots we use a small tripod and timer.

Probably not enough light. I take a lot of pictures of cabs and slabs and generally hold the camera the same distance. When I have a focus problem, I take a series of shots, increasing and decreasing the distance. I'm going to photograph some cabs I cut today, tomorrow morning. I expect things to be better.

Try downloading a photo-gray gradient background sheet for your pics. That way the camera will be forced to focus on the stone.
