You might try taking the picture with the camera farther away from the stones. Then crop the photo to enlarge the image.

Not enough light giving you a longer exposure time (slower shutter speed) can cause this. For best shots we use a small tripod and timer.

Probably not enough light. I take a lot of pictures of cabs and slabs and generally hold the camera the same distance. When I have a focus problem, I take a series of shots, increasing and decreasing the distance. I'm going to photograph some cabs I cut today, tomorrow morning. I expect things to be better.

That way the camera will be forced to focus on the stone.
