Hey Kim. Lookin' good. What the hell are ya doin' standing at the grinder? Grab a bar stool and sit down. Actually I just made a small table for my grinder with a tray for all the stones lined up ready to go, and it's at just the right height to sit on a small chair-padded chair, that is. What grit wheels do you have on your grinder?

Hey Kim,
Those are looking really nice!
I stand when I am cutting cabs. I just do not feel comfortable sitting down and trying to cut cabs. Some stand and some sit ... it's whatever works best for you.
That Pietersite is going to be an absolute beauty!!! Don't get me wrong ... the others are nice as well ... but I really enjoy the Pietersite cab.
You have been busy, be sure to post some photo's when they are done.

i stand too, Kim, i just don't have a chair i feel comfy in to do the business. i can only do 4-5 stones in a session, but i'm still learning too. you got a nice round bevel going on there, nice shapes too. love the Ocean Jasper!
keep up the great work!

stoner my grinder (plus alot of other rock related things : is on the kitchen counter so if i use a bar stool i have nowhere to put my legs and get close to the counter - being very short and gratefully having short arms and legs to go with that so i don't look freaky lol - i don't think i can reach the wheel from the stool if i can't get realllllllllllly close. when i get the workshop built i will take this into consideration and have a nook for my legs and make sure it is the proper height for me. i have a genie so whatever wheels came on it is what i have stoner lol. bearcreek i've got some questions about the pietersite. what you see there is golds and blues and a very hard gold that is opaque - the blue is transparent and flashes. but i have some other pieces that are more transparent (from another vendor) and quartzy looking. the one you are seeing is african pietersite. is the chinese pietersite more transparent or can it just vary no matter where it comes from? i have no red in this but was wondering - if red tigers eye is just heat treated gold tigers eye - could you heat treat the pietersite to get reds or with the quartz in it is that not recommended? or is all the pietersite you see with red in it heat treated? harry i love my genie - my favorite thing i've gotten so far. i was trying (and note i said trying) to wait on a slab saw until i could get the workshop built but my patience just plum wore out saturday and my new slab saw is on the way - 20" commercial covington - gonna set it up right here at work - i've got so much stuff i've been hoarding for slabbing. this was my christmas present but at the rate this workshop thing is going i wasn't gonna get it until next christmas - and then my hubby might try to combine 2 presents into 1 and we can't have that . thanks all for the compliments and i will update pics when i make it to the polish. glad to know i'm not the only one standing too lol. kim

Hey Kim , you are well on the way to outdo John Sands .
I love the colours and shapes you have in the picture.
I have tried my hand for the first time today at using a grinding wheel . I built the workbench high enough so that I can stand with a straight back. I got soaked and will have to aquire an apron tomorrow.
Since I had my 60th birthday earlier this month I was fortunate to have gotten( PURCHASED) this machinery . I love it already haha.
I hope to be able to show some nice stones too one of these days. Just have another wish.....for a trimsaw. Next year is coming up fast.

Kim, those are lookin' good! Going to be really nice when you get them finished.
I have my grinder where I can sit but have tried standing at it a couple of times. Doesn't matter if I stand or sit, I can only do about an hour, then have to take a break. Either way, it's really hard on my back and shoulders.
I am doing alot better with my bevels with the diamond grinding wheel, but still not really happy with them. Practice, practice, practice makes perfect. Just wish I had more time to practice!

Hi Kim,
Both, African and Chinese Pietersite are wonderful to work with. I have not heard of heat treating Pietersite, but, anything is possible. I have not cut enough of it, to hear from my suppliers as to any heat treating processes.
For the most part - red Tiger's Eye is heat treated golden Tiger's Eye. There are very few natural reds ... but, if the entire stone, slab, cab is red ... it has been heat treated.
Hope this helps,
John

Very nice lookin' cabs Kim. They all have a nice shape and an awesome shine, so I guess your getting the hang of your grinder. I said it before about this hobby, it only gets better with time. Did you ever finish the Poppy jasper?
