Hey Everybody, does anyone have a silicon carbide grit wheel that they really think highly of? I have a couple (80 and 120 grit) manufactured by PFERD and find that they are just okay. At $80 apiece I was hoping for a bit better, and would gladly pay more for better results. These will be used on an 8" bench grinder and only for some shaping of tumbles. I do have diamond tile blades on the other side but they are too aggressive for some of the soft stuff we run.
Thanks, Al

Pferd are probably industrial wheels for steel, if so they are too hard for lapidary, the SiC grains round and then they burn the stone causing cracking and chipping. You really need to buy Lapidary wheels, these are soft and dissapear at a great rate, save up your pennies and buy a decent Diamond wheel, plated ones aren't all that much more expensive than SiC. Sintered are the Rolls Royce and the price is Rolls Royce too, but they will oulast stacks of SiC and plated Diamond wheels.

The ones I have said they could handle stone but they sure do disappear at a great rate. I can control the heat fairly well as my grinder is variable speed and I am continually dipping in water to see better. I will look into diamond wheels as i'd rather spend more upfront than keep buying the same substandard crap over and over. Al

I've ordered replacements for my Jadecarver 80 grit diamond wheel with a plastic hub and a 180-220 grit diamond wheel (forgot but good quality). Both have a lot of life left. If you aren't in a hurry I can figure out a price when I swap them out. I have to take the top off my machine and it's pain to replace wheels so I wait until I have multiple wheels to replace. The other wheel is a 280 soft from Baltic and will take a while to arrive.
