Sort of difficult to source rough. There was someone selling some pieces (at high prices) at the Prineville and Madras shows 2-3 years ago. Don't recall who they were, though. Might look again if I make it to those this year. Also, it is one of those things that pictures seldom give a good idea of the quality and how useable it is in the rough - I've gotten a couple of pieces online in the past that turned out would have been hard to cut and get good gems - sold 'em as specimens. Good idea to learn to identify pieces that may have color layers before going looking through piles - you could go blind looking at wet obsidian from every angle over an afternoon.

Yes, it is expansive. I saw a cab listed of the material with a price of $450.

It's pretty risky to purchase online, as @rocks2dust noted...even if you buy it at a show, really. That thin film of fire could stop just inside the rock beyond your view, or wrap around on itself. I'd want to practice a whole bunch with some of the other flavors like silver/gold sheen or lace, learning how to cut the rough to get to the planes/film, and rocking the super low dome you need to show everything off properly. You could drop a pretty penny on rough and then kill it very quickly, or find that it wasn't worth the money to begin with. I spent hours digging out a piece of low-grade fire that was in some mahogany/gold sheen I had...it was like a ridiculously difficult puzzle.
