Finally, after two or three months of being way to busy on weekends, I fainally had a chance to knock a few out: DSC_1824_Four from today by Stephan Telm, on Flickr Clockwise from UL: Coquina jasper (not a real jasper), MH Poppy jasper, unknown jasper, mariposite. Background is silver lace "onyx." The coquina is a bugger. It's hard bits of snail shell (which are not, as I understand it, actually coquina) embedded in soft mudstone. Messy and it always seems to get plucked. It's like a reverse moss agate. I was careful. Shaped and cut the girdle on the 220, domed with a soft, nearly bald 280, gentle pressure... and still.... It's one of those where perfection isn't in the cards, but it's pretty, even with the plucked spots.
The PJ came from a small, rough chunk, not a slab. The way it turned out, it kind of reminds me of the black-suited (Venom-symbiote) version of Spiderman... with measles.

Very nice. The Coquina is my favorite.

Nice cabs. Glad you finally got some time to cut a few. My favorite is the Coquina, too.

Thank you. I like the coquina as well, but I definitely have to remember that it's a natural material that will usually yield wabi-sabi cabs. They are dramatic, but imperfect.
