My son found this setting by accident when he was taking some photos of flowers. It is the stage light setting and can be found when you enter portrait mode. In older versions of Iphones portrait mode would blur out the distant background. With the cool stage light upgrade it is able to black out the entire background. I really cant believe this is possible on a phone camera. I know this setting is available on all Iphone X models but it may also be available on the Ipad pro the jamesp likes so much. This picture is with the normal camera setting. And this is taken at the same time using the stage light setting. Zero post processing. Before and after like above And this is the flower picture my son took Chuck

Maybe black for white products, not sure. Some photo edit software will do the white background in various degrees of quality. Or you can hire it done for $1 to $2 per photo. With stacked focus, if the camera has the internal software to do the calculations and photo editing during the actual shooting of the photo better results are often had. Olympus cameras simply take a stack of shots as the focus is changed from front to back and then a complicated math formula build the pixels together. Digital cameras have distance finding capability, that is for sure and may be the way Apple is clipping the subject from the background ?? No idea. May be a comparison situation, don't know. Curious if your camera will do a white background. ex.

The edges of the subject can be fuzzy or clipped on the white backgrounds. Looks like your iPhone did an excellent job. And those are fine photos. They spend the money on the technology for those phones. Thanks the huge demand for cell phones. May be some of man's finest technology. Money drives...waiting to see what they come up with. A software electrical engineer friend specializes in adapting cell phones to control all types of machines and electronic devices. Amazing

I have not seen much online about using it for product photos. Looks like it was added to cater to the selfie crowd. It is not very well known. My kid did not even realize that flower picture was like that till he downloaded them later. The background is not black while taking the photo it does it after the shot is taken. This is done on the latest Iphone and I think this is the intended use. Chuck

Chuck.....I agree with your take. My daughter has discovered that feature on her new iPhone. I've borrowed it a few times to shoot various stills and a few rocks, it's really a nice camera.....but like Dave, my phone is 2.5yrs old and still works great, and since I purchased the Nikon, rarely shoot much with the phone anymore......just quickies.

I bought the iPhone X and it has some great features. Unfortunately, my 16year old daughter took it and gave my wife her 8 and I am left with the 6s. Something about Dad not needing the newest phone. ;-)

Thanks!!! That’s super cool. I can’t keep up with all these features phones have. I’ve had the iPhone X for a while and had no clue it could do that!!
