Got to get out Sunday- unfortunately my plans fell through and no private land hunting but I still found some cool stuff like this nice chunk of wood

Nice. I went out rockhounding on Sunday and it was our first warm day (80 F). I fried in the "heat". I got some interesting crystals in Niagara limestone, but would have loved to get a rock like that.

That is a saw size chunk Or a keeper for your collection Way too big for my little tile saw my friend. I still need to get it cleaned up and check it out better. In fact, I'm carrying around muddy rocks from the last three trips in the back of my vehicle. Not enough hours in the day to accomplish everything that I want to do...

I'll probably have to readjust, however. When we were out and it was only in the 30's I was actually starting to get used to it. I've only been able to find a few larger chunks of wood that size around here, most of it is quite a bit smaller. I try to resist but I really like finding pet wood- especially with cool colors, grain patterns or knots.

Nice find. Last time I got any petrified wood I visited my brother in North Dakota and we went to the western part of the state and picked up some. As to the temperature here in Columbia South Carolina, we've been basking in 100 degree weather, not a good time to rockhound. The average high today is supposed to be 86. Rick B

Petrified wood is all over the place out here. I literally leave probably half of what I see, I've become a little more selective on which pieces I bring home. That is a bit warm, especially once you throw in the humidity...
