So Tela sent me a gorgeous piece of crazy lace and I decided to give it a shot last night. I was going to make two cabs out of it but when I took it to the tile saw the stone seemed to have other ideas. Ok, I thought, I could work with how it cut. Then I was grinding with the stone in the palm of one hand and the dremel in the other when I felt it split right down the middle. Sigh. Yep, now I know why they call it crazy lace, I about lost it. So now I'm hoping to get three good cabs out of it. Even though they're smaller than I wanted. Anyway, here's the slab, the breakup, and one of the cabs I was able to save. I hope. Thanks for looking.

Only ended up with 2 cabs, it was just too brittle. Or as my friend Walt says, maybe I'm too rough on stones. Anyway, here's the second- I think it will end up nice but I'm still disappointed that I broke up a fantastic slab.

Hey, you are learning and did great.
A dremel can be rough on stones. I have many slabs that I will not use the dremel on. Waiting until I can afford a cabbing machine and trim saw. Many, as in about 100 slabs and about 100 preforms. Probably more. Until I have the needed equipment, just experimenting with the dremel and tumbler with some of the harder, fracture free ones. Am not using the dremel and tumbler on those I consider more valuable or rare.
The only way to learn is to experiment. So chose your victims and go for it.

Thanks, I like learning from people with experience. Now if I could just only listen! It's not like I don't have thousands of rocks and wood in my garage that I can use- but I see great ones and lose all control it seems. It's funny that you used the word "victims." rockjunquie told me that I would do it justice and I guess I did. However, I don't think she meant sentencing it to death!!! Anyway, thanks for the advice!

Hey, I consider all questionable slabs and preforms I have worked with victims, based on my crude methods.
Do not think of it as death. I am sure the final results will be great.
the only advice I can give is save the great ones for later and practice on those that are common.

Now you know how I felt when that pink Tiffany disintegrated. When you work with rocks, this is bound to happen. Sucks when it does, though. Sorry. And sorry or jinxing it.

Yep, I know exactly how you felt- if you said a bad word or two, that is! I'm learning that it does happen and it's good to know that it wasn't just me. No, you didn't jinx it at all and now I'll move on to the other beautiful slabs that my friends have sent. But I may be a wee bit more careful...
