Roughly 5"×1.5" slab from a small chunk I pried out of a seam near Wendover NV last spring. Was actually headed back to the car, moving faster than usual, and just caught a miniscule "something" out if the corner of my eye. Didn't have tools that were appropriate for the job, worked about an hour as the sun was going down to pry out that one little piece. Worth it. This one is a perpendicular cross section of the seam, thinking about cutting the remainder at a fairly steep angle to try to stretch out the purty area. Less usable material, but hoping for a cool cut. Thoughts? Thanks for looking. ETA: Sorry for the lousy photos, they looked better on my phone! Wendover:

My thoughts: Head back to Nv and collect some more. Killer stuff! That's definitely part of the plan for this summer. It's "only" a 5 hour drive. (Which by Nevada standards is pretty much "just down the road a bit".) Have that spot GPS marked, but it's in a popular area. Hoping that the difficulty of removal results in that little seam still being there.

Huh. If you have an odd-shaped protuberance anywhere around the chunk you could lop it off and cut it the other way. That way you could see how it would face without losing too much of the overall size.
Nice rock. Is this the first time you've gotten the saw oil off yer' hands long enough to post one...?

Nice rock. Is this the first time you've gotten the saw oil off yer' hands long enough to post one...? Yo Vinnie! (Sorry, couldn't resist!) I like the way you think. I took two decent slices off it, I think I'm going to cut the remainder the other way. I did post a couple of thunderegg slices too. Cut up a decent sized chunk of what I thought was murky black obsidian to give to a knapper friend - 5 slabs, biggest 8x4.5, all 3/8" thick. It's clear. Gonna make some pretty cool blades. Did get one nice slab off today - sent a pic in a pm to you, will post here too. Argh

It is fun figuring out orientations for slabs. Sometimes it takes a couple of windows or facing an end and then making your best guess, but it's nice when slabs come off with nice patterns and such.
I hate it when it seems like I coulda' done better at the orientations, but I've yet to get the x-ray vision thing figured out. Just have to take yer' best shot and live with what comes off the rock.
