i went to visit an elderly relative this evening who loves the rocks as much as us. he gave me one of his petrified wood treasures tonight and told me to slab it on my saw but i wouldn't dare touch this piece. it sparkles like diamonds are growing on and in it. i hope i have captured them so y'all can see the white spots are all sparkling crystals all over the thing and it's like the whole bark side is coated with a crystal glazing. he has so many more things he wants to give me and hasn't the energy to go search for them. he has shells and rocks from the marshall islands collected during wwII before the u.s. conducted nuclear testing there and caused radiation problems. he has saved all the special rocks he's seen throughout his life and has them stored. i put all my jewelry in a box and took it for him to look at. he looked at each one slowly and examined all the details of every stone. he use to come several times a week and couldn't wait to see what new rocks i had. i miss him coming . i'll just have to take them to him. kim

Ditto, it sounds like the gentleman is very alone in the lapidary world. I meet a lot of folks like him in my shop. I think, just you listening, makes him feel like an human. He sees things, like we do, that no one else even cares about. Very few live for the beauty of the stone.

That is so cool, I don't think I'd cut it either. That's a very special piece and it sounds like it came from a very special person. One of the "greatest generation" ... not too many of them left, visit him while you can. Thanks for sharing the pic Kim.

You may call me heartless on this, but I'll call myself just REALLY curious , but I would cut a piece off the end of the piece (past where you have the handle of the scissors) and cab that to give to him. I would looooooooooove to see how that looks inside. I know nothing of using a saw (or tumbling stones for that matter), not knowing if this will damage the remainder of the piece, but then you would make him happy by using it to make something for you as well as having a very big piece to keep as a souvenir. Sorry, but I always like to see what's inside stuff - who knows what you might find

WOW- That is a beautiful piece of Pet wood- I would have a hard time cuttin into that also--But Your friend may want to see the inside also? That is too cool- I used to have (Passed on) a great uncle that lived in AZ- and everytime he visited (not often enough) he would bring me some rock treasures- Oh I loved and worshiped those rocks- I kept them in a special box and would pull them out when I was sad. Then one day he just died- and his kids sold off his Lap shop- Well those rocks became even more priceless to me- Then my family moved out of the suburbs and into the country- Long story short- My special treasures were stored in a garage while we moved- After the move the garge we were renting sent us a check for all the stuff they sold durning a GARAGE SALE- and you guessed it- my small treasure chest netted all of $2.50. Istill get uptight over the whole thing- I think that is why I am still obbsessed with rocks and now that I am learning to tumble (correctly) I have become almost fanatical (as many of you can probably understand) Oh This weekend I'm going to Lowes to look at a trim saw!

That is a beautil piece of pet wood. My suggestion would be to cut one end or in half so you can stand it on end, or have a pair to put on a fireplace mantle or book ends. That way you could see what was inside as well as keep the integrity of the outside. Tami

Just my opinion here...I would slab off just a small bit from the bottom end of that pet wood and make him a bolo or something out of it....I think he would real love it. I know if it were me...I would. Thas is one very cool looking piece of pet wood...I envy you on that one..

Speaking from experience I know he would love something that you made from a small piece of the pet wood. My aunt gave me a complete glass bead making kit without the torch and when I get a torch I will make her some jewelry out of the glass she gave me. Tami
