What there's grass in those pictures? I don't even remember what grass looks like!
Amazing pictures? Those must be really heavy if they're pet wood - it looks just like the trees in my back yard (actually my trees are all white & covered in a permanent white blanket) How can you tell they're pet wood just by looking?

I would guess the two biggest ones will go in the 300-400 pound range. I know it is a job moving them which is why I don't do that very often.
the first big one I had to drag home behind a truck because me and my two sons just could not get it into the back of the truck....and to think when I found it only a area about 3 inches by 6 inches was showing above ground.....the more we dug the bigger it got.....

Yikes, I hadn't been paying enough attention to your scale. I thought that was a 12" ruler you had laying on them, now I'm pretty sure it is a yardstick!!!! If I was amazed before, I'm completely spellbound now! I find petrified wood too, but it's usually tumbling-sized material, and only very rarely would I find something weighing more than a pound. Good going! A person named "Duke" had once posted some giant petrified wood pics here too ... who knows, maybe you are neighbours

Nice bits of wood , will be some fun trying to get it under the saw A member of our club has once used a tractor with front end loader to lift a big trunk of pet wood. It is now in his garden . It has a hole through the centre through which a rose is growing That trunk is about 36 inches wide by 30 inches high. HUGE indeed. He has more pieces like someone had cut slices of a tree so nice. I'm getting some pet wood from Souris Rock & Agate in Manitoba (I'm only getting 0.75 lbs - pretty pitiful huh?) but the guy said that sometimes they get pieces of pet wood from their pit that are over 300 lbs. Honestly, I may have seen some but never investigated it. How can you tell that it's pet wood just by looking? Can you? Or do you have to touch it?

Mostly I tell by sight. Most pet wood of any size will still have that wood look. Been around this stuff all my life so to me it is just normal. Getting pet wood in the 300 pound and up is not uncommon. I here are some pic of a house that was built from pet wood they took out of the lake near where I live back when the lake was being dug out. You will notice the very large pieces in the yard too. Pho Pho

Yup...those two big things in the yard are pet wood/tree trunks. As for cutting the pet wood to make the house...they don't cut it..they just put it in place and put the mortor around it just like they would normal stone. I have heard stories about how they were hauling truck loads of pet wood out of the area where they were digging the lake. They still do find some rather large pieces now and then in this area along with lots of arrowheads...I haven't found any arrowheads but have a lot of rather nice pieces of pet wood around the house. I'll try to get them together one day and get a good pic of them. I gave my sister a bunch a while back for her garden too.
