Some of the pictures arent great but you can get the idea.

Here are my first attempts at jewellery making, which came out ok.

This was my first go, bit heavy on the wire but the stone wasnt great anyway !

Amythest in a cage - I'm actually quite happy with this - picture is a bit dark but its a nice stone

Hubby had a go too - this was his first attempt which made me sick because I thought it came out really well - I think my words were you jammy git when he handed it to me !

So there ya go, after lots of bad words and sweat. What I found hard was starting off and holding the stone becuase they are slippery little suckers ;D Anyone have any trade secrets to help with that ?

Any tips or suggestions welcome, you can be brutal if you wish

wow, you've been busy. your wrapping (and your husbands) sure look better than my attempts. I still have problems with those slippery rocks. Maybe I should practice on on ugly rough rock... the wrap would probably turn out great then, but it would be on a ugly rock.

your first attempts are very good! i like the triangular stone in the middle of the first pic.

Hey KD, I've never posted a photo of any wire wrapped rocks, and there's a reason for it. My best attempt yet looked like a 2 year old did it.

Hey Rose, I think they look great! I am a little partial to the "cage" style wrap. Don't know why, just like the overall effect.

You did a great job on those. Just remember, and this goes for all of you who are trying, wire has a mind and energy of it's own, just go with the flow. If it isn't going the direction you want it to, try a different position.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I just got some more wire today so will keep at it !

I have a special c clamp that may help with holding the rocks- I'll post a picture as soon as I can!

Thanks Stefan that would be great, so I know what to look out for ! It would really help to have something to hold the rock - I actually used selotape at one point to hold some of the wires still on a couple of them ;D

I used 0.8mm wire (20 guage).

I saw them, I thought they were lovely.

I found the 0.8mm wire is quite sturdy and strong, I think it would need quite a tug to make the stone come out.

On the other hand this one .......

started out as a cage but I did it with 0.6 mm wire (because I had ran out of the 0.8 ) and the stone was too heavy at first and pulled the wire down which was going to make the stone fall out, so I looped another piece of wire up through the cage and wrapped it around at both ends with a bend in the middle to make it look planned ;D so it held the cage together its pretty secure now.

Ah Rose, excelent job! I so wish I could wire wrap, but, like KD and MichiganRocks, it's just not meant to be, it's not my thing. Though now that I know the gage of wire I should us (what I have is too soft) I might try one more time. I'll throw some more money in that big rocky hole.
