So, I recently got fed up with not having any way to do anything with the rocks I'd been collecting for the last lifetime. I ordered a "cheap" flat lap online and then found an HP A50 used and send the flat lap back. I still wanted to create flat surfaces easily but I was pretty much tapped out after buying the A50. I remembered I had an old belt driven bench grinder. I found it, a motor, a baking pan, a sheet of plexiglass and some other stuff hiding around the garage. I tapped some H2O off of the A50's water line, ordered a couple of cheap flat laps and I'm in business. The grinder sits in the pan and the two plexiglass slash guards keep the majority of the water contained and away from the belt/motor. Right now the water just kind of sits there and sprays on the wheel. I keep saying I'm going to get around to something more elegant eventually. You can also see the drain tapped in that carries the water outside of the garage. Before/After a quick hit on the wheel l All in all, I'm pretty pleased with it. Changing out disks only takes a minute. I kind of wish I'd have mounted it somewhere a little easier to get to but it sits right under the A50 and out of the way. Same power box I mounted on the stand serves both and same water run too.
