Looks like Tiger Eye to me Rose. Nice job on the rocks, you had a pretty assortment. Can't help you with getting a shine on the malachite, I suppose it needs to be done by hand on a grinder. Great job!!

Thanks Cher Yes I think it would be better on a grinder, its very soft - the pieces were quite big when they went in but ground down alot. Anyway off to look for Tiger Eye now

tiger eye on the 3rd pic, nice shine. ya can't get any better than Tin Ox.
some of the sodalite can go again if you decide to do a soft batch, but very good tumble!

That's definately Tiger eye, and it came out great. Sodalite is abugger to shine and you did a good job. I have no clue about Malacite but it's a beatiful stone, shiney or not. Great job overall!

rose great job! i looked on that polish chart and it lists tin oxide, linda a, and chrome oxide as polishes to use on the malachite. maybe it needed to stay in the polish a little longer? throw it back in next time you run a polish batch with the tin oxide.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I may give the Malachite another polish but my kids seem to have claimed two of the bigger pieces ! - they say they look like boomerangs so I will probably leave them as they are but give the other smaller pieces another go later. I think Malachite is a lovely rock, but if I cant manage to get a shine I dont think I would tumble it again as the rough is pretty expensive.

You certainly went for extreme mixing on the stone hardess front ... from malachite (mohs 3.5-4) to sodalite (mohs hardness 5.5) to tiger eye (mohs 7). Normally, you should keep them to the same digit, or certainly no more than one digit apart. So it's not surprising that the malachite didn't shine, since the tiger eye and sodalite beat the living crap out of it. It's very impressive that your sodalite took a shine, as I would have thought the tiger eye would have done some serious damage to it. Maybe try the malachite again by itself, starting at the pre-polish stage, with the missing mass made up by a huge mess of plastic pellets.
Nice job on an interesting mix of stones.

Yeah I realise that now, I didnt know it was Tiger eye or else I wouldnt have put it in there. I'm lucky the sodalite came out well - I think its likely because they Tiger eye were only very small pieces.
I got it in a mixed bag of soft rock from a supplier so assumed I wouldnt have to sort through it to pull anything out, I guess I will check any mixed bags more carefully in future ! - the malachite I bought separately.

Hey Rose, this is a copy of a post on Ganoksin. Might be worth a try to hand polish the Malachite.

Thanks Ron
I was just looking at one of the pieces and noticed that there is a really shiney band going around one of the pieces but either side of it is really dull, its very strange stuff - but so pretty so I am tempted to have another bash at it.
Couldnt remember my password so posting as a guest !

My dad and I were just talking about buffing and polishing compounds and he suggested getting compounds you use on the car. He said that the wax you use on you car even has some abrasion in it to help get rid of some of the old wax. He also suggested using arm & hammer toothpaste as a buffing compound. The toothpaste would work as a cooling agent and the baking soda in it would work as an abrassive. I don't know if you will get a really bright shine, but you might get a satin finish on your malachite. I agree with everyone else the last picture does look like tiger eye. Nice sodalite. Tami

Nice job- I loved the sodalite- I got a few cutoffs and a rough cab in a bag of mixed hard stuff- Well Thankfully I recognized BEFORE I did too much damage ( it only spend a couple days in the rough) Can't wait to get it tumbling!

Hello Rose,
I love the Sodalite ... great color!
I too have had problems with Malachite in the past. I would like to try a whole batch of Malachite and see what I can come up with for a suitable solution.
Great batch and thanks for sharing the photo's,
John
