I decided to join this forum after searching for and finding over 30 Petosky stones this spring. I am a total newbie to rock hunting, but really fell in love with the search for these little stones. I brought them back home with me, and had my 5th grade class each take one to sand and polish. They had a blast! Then I decided to buy a rock tumbler, and am trying to figure out how to best use it for these fossils. I’m realizing I probably should have done some research first before buying the tumbler because Petoskys don’t tumble well. I guess I’ll just have to use it on the other stones I find during my beach searches!

Welcome. We have another teacher here from Michigan who is probably the best guy to help you. His name is Rob, and his user name is Jugglerguy. He also has a YouTube channel by the name of Michigan Rocks www.youtube.com/user/jugglerguy1. Enjoy.

Hi there, Petosky. It sounds like you already figured out how to hand polish Petoskey stones, but here’s a video for you. Here’s A thread to a thread about a way to tumble Petoskey stones, it requires both a rotary tumbler and a Lot-O tumbler. Another good option is to tumble your rocks in a rotary tumbler through the 220 stage and then use the sand paper method in the video to finish them up. To rotary tumbler them. Fill your barrel 3/4 full of just Petoskey stones (no other types of rocks) and coarse grit (60/90 or 80) and tumble for three days. Check them after three days and pull out any that don’t have any holes left and replace them with fresh Petoskeys. Tumble again for another three days and remove any that are done.
