Well, look at this- the cactus survived winter outside in the pot! Almost like it's been doing it for its entire life... 😁 This is the first time it's bloomed, thought I'd share.

How cool! Love cactus blooms. They are always so bright and beautiful.

I miss seeing cacti in bloom. Is that a barrel cactus? Very pretty.

I miss seeing cacti in bloom. Is that a barrel cactus? Very pretty. I believe it is a barrel cactus. The funny thing is, the bloom closed that night and hasn't opened since. The other one that I have in a pot bloomed yesterday, then closed at night. I don't know much about cacti and haven't been able to find much online about how the flowers behave, not sure if they close at night, only open when it's hot and sunny, etc.

Nice little barrel cactus there. I'm no expert, and there are folks on this board who know a lot more about desert plants than I do. The cacti in our yard bloom in the morning and close up towards evening. The barrel cactus in the kitchen window doesn't do that. I'm sure that different species/varieties have different life habits. Here's a shot of the Opuntia Polychrome in the front yard yesterday afternoon. The blossoms all closed up at the end of the day, today it had three new blossoms. Transplanted this guy from the wild last spring. Seems to be happy.

You did a good job taking this picture. I see a lot of these in my local desert community. Once a year, in Spring if memory serves me. Here is a sample that I came across while hiking earlier" I have trouble with the flowers. When the sun hits the flower, the color is often so bright, that it will over-expose the flower. It is hard to photograph for me in sunlight, due to my limited experience because of this.
