This is currently in a tumble batch I have running. Have never seen a black agate before. The black areas remind me of Apache Tear. The gray crystal areas are very smooth. This photo is after 23 days in 60/80 SIC. Now the entire batch is in a 48 hour Borax cleaning, as some are fossils which I want to keep some features of. Do not for sure where this came from. Either I found it on my land, or was from Billy. Has anyone else found predominately black agates in WI or MN before? Thanks.

Don't know about your area, but Oregon has lots of black agate, as also does Washington and Montana.. Cool material

Looks like pet wood to me... Very common around western Oregon. Don't know about your area but looks an awful lot like black wood to me. Just saw the qtz center when I expanded it.... thinking agate nodule.

Utah has a couple of areas with black agate. Levan and Agate hill close to topaz mountain has good specimens

Fossilized coral is often black. It can be pried out of the black clay at the center line of most coral bearing rivers in Ga/Fl. It is black from sitting in black muck/clay that settles in areas in the middle of the river for 1000's of years @fernwod. Particularly in the pools between the shoals where organic sediment settles. The coral has micro capillaries from the petrified polyp structure that allows deep absorption and therefore staining.
