Two photos of a chunk of Sycamore from Central Oregon that I soaked in bleach for a few days. The effect is only on the surface, if I don't like the looks of it, I can refinish it and take it back to what it was.

woodman Does the bleaching hold?, or is there any fading over time. and how deep does it go, will polishing diminish the color? I would guess that not all wood will react in the same manner. I may test this on a couple of the Big Bend end pieces I have. Henry

It does not go very deep at all, that is why you polish it before you bleach it. It does not work on all material, trial and error.

I am impressed. Is it still nicely polished, or does it lose some of its shine?

Is this regular Chlorox-type bleach?

Is this regular Chlorox-type bleach? regular house hold bleach of any brand, I does not lose the polish at all, but it has to be polished first. The bleaching process is very shallow

I will keep this in mid when I go to the local rock show at the end of the month. Did you rinse it with baking soda in water?

Oh duh, I was thinking of the acid bath the other guy did for his fossils. I'm rather sleep-depraved over here.

great post, thanks woodman! Sorry if this has already been asked/answered but will the bleaching work (and hold) on a finished cabochon?

Should, at least on pet wood. may not on all tho! Agree with that - you'd want to bleach the finished cab. Bleach isn't going to hurt the polish on silica material like agate, jasper or petrified wood. I'd just suggest, however, testing on a piece of scrap of the same material before bleaching your finished work. Depending on what minerals may be in there, the end-result may not be what you'd hoped, and no sense in wasting your time invested in cutting if the result isn't going to be what you want.
