Saw this for sale locally and had to share. Listing said it was made from "precious" stones, but am guessing semi-precious ones. Imagine the time that went into creating this. Seller said they brought it back from China. Does anyone know if these are mass produced there?

My parents got a similar one about twenty years ago, I would guess it is 20-24" diameter. Looks pretty cool but upon very close inspection not as impressive. Not necessarily commenting on the one you posted because I cannot tell from the pictures, but there are many similar mass produced globes in this style. I've seen them on Amazon, department stores and even BJ's (they are a warehouse club chain).

That jewelry shopping channel had them, too.

Just because it is mass produced in a low cost country doesn't mean its not impressive though. Something like that still takes a ton of time and craftsmanship.

Has not sold yet. I am tempted to take a look, just to see how high of quality it is. Beyond my budget at $100.00 and I would have no place for it.

Definitely mass produced. Hundreds if not thousands were sold in Vegas alone back in the day. The numbers I saw on sale tell me that there's no way any big time investment went into each of the globes. There were entire stalls and shops of them. There were even little ones made into wine cork toppers. Don't remember what that size of yours was selling for. But I don't think it was $100 new! Your seller didn't bring it back from China, that's a little fib.

peachfront Good to know. Thanks. Seller was a world traveler. Has many items that appear to be authentic, hand made for sale now. Most are from China/India. I decided not to check the items out. Seller is having a garage sale this weekend.

The item was made in one of those two, China or India (I forget), but nobody had to be a world traveler to pick them up, so... up to you if you believe they'd carry one all that way on the plane. I gave away a bunch of the little ones for Christmas one year, they were stocking stuffers, cheap cheap cheap... the first time I saw a larger globe in a store, I considered to buy it, but then I walked around more and saw how many of them were everywhere so I didn't. I try to avoid encouraging mass production. A garage sale purchase that is cheap enough is fine. A garage sale purchase sold at close to the original price for a mass produced item made to take aim at the tourist pocketbook = not fine. In my judgment. peachfront Good to know. Thanks. I saw some Globes like that when I was in China eight years ago, but they weren't as nice.

OK, seller is getting desperate, as very little of her world travels items have sold. She also has a Dulcimer made in Sweden for sale, that she wants minimal for. I would love the Dulcimer, as I have a 6 string that I play. What do you think would be a good price for the globe? Thinking bundle here.

My parents friend carried one back on the airplane from China as well that was 14-16" for the globe between 2003-2006 and gave it to them as a gift upon their return. I thought it was really cool at the time but its not actually that well made. The blue water is not a stone. I saw a massive one in Waikiki tourist gallery that was probably 36" across that was priced at ~$5000 but that was absolutely humungous compared to the 14-16" ones so you can't even compare the price. The metal is very light on them and feels cheaper then it should. There was also some spelling errors. Its a neat novelty on first glance but other than that, its junk. I've seen them all over more recently.
