So I made this last night and was wondering if anyone ever tumbles Turritella in a rotary and how well it does? Thanks!

I tried Turritella in both rotary and vibe. I got a lot of undercutting and the shine was patchy.

Currently tumbling some. Few solid pieces, but I’ll stick it out

I tumbled some whole shells and a cab. Will try to find photo of the cab, but it turned out nice.
A lot depends on the host rock.

I have read up on tumbling it a little bit and it said pretty much the same thing. I think that once I ground down the outside parts the remaining piece seems fairly solid. We'll see, I'm throwing it in tonight regardless.

Miket, if the base material and shell are hard the material will tumble with decent results. If soft areas exist there will be substantial undercutting in a vibe.

All I have is two rotary tumblers, I'll put it in my 3 pound barrel since it seems to treat stones a little bit nicer. With the cabs I've been shaping it seems like a week is usually plenty in the course stage. I just throw them in with other rocks I have tumbling, then they go to the bunch waiting for the next stage. After course I've been using plastic pellets for each stage until they're polished. Not sure if that is right or wrong but it seems to be working so far.

I used the pellets in my 3lb. rotary for the turitella. Ran it with similar hardness rocks.
Can't wait to see your results.

Miket, sorry about posting 2 Turritella images in the incorrect place but I am without my tech savvy grandson that normally handles my pictures.

I have tumbled turritella and found that it tumbles up well and can have an awesome shine when finished. I bought 5 lbs from The Rock Shed and tumbled up about 2 lbs as a start to see how it went. I was happy with the overall results so I'll go ahead and tumble up the rest.
Like any rock, you can have bad/tough spots here and there, but go for it.

It's been in the rotary for a few days now and I checked it this morning- it seems to be doing well. A few more days and I'll pull it out of coarse and put it with the stuff waiting to move on. Oh, and I just tumbled it with the agates I already had rolling and the turritella seems to be holding it's own.

I've been polishing some, rotary for a few weeks and then the LOT O. It's difficult and certainly not my favorite to do. Most goes to pebble pups that really like it, the 5 year old neighbor was fascinated with using one of our magnifying glasses. My wife likes it and I did this pendant for her, she has another which shows the rough side, gets compliments on both.

A lot depends on the quality of the matrix. Some of it is very soft, some is hard enough to polish. The matrix varies in color from light brown to almost black. In my experience, the darker the matrix the more likely it will polish well. Incidentally we were exploring near Fort La Clede and the Overland Stage stop and were surprised to see the building material--turritella. still standing--used from 1862-1869 close up of stone Hope yours tumbles well!
