I am in desperate need of clearing some more space in my workshop. These items came with an estate I bought. The widow told me they were used to polish the North Carolina star rubies her husband used to cut. I sold the leftover rubies years ago, but I found these tools. Looks like they'll weight around 1.5 pounds packed, and because one of them is just a little too big, they don't quite fit into a small Priority Mail flat rate box. Which means the shipping could be quite expensive. So... I'm thinking I'll post them for one week for $25 all-in (includes shipping) to the first person with a US street shipping address who can pay via Paypal. After a week, if nobody claims them, I'll just toss 'em. I've never used 'em, if you look at the picture, you know everything I know... so... I need to sell 'em or toss 'em. Comments welcome. Including negative comments, since I don't know if these items have any actual value. I'd rather save time & not ship around garbage if that's all it is. On the other hand, they have the look of something somebody might actually use... Could be they were used for silver polishing or something else. The estate had some silver in it as well as the star rubies. I just don't know. You can see the picture on Twitter... I don't know why I can't upload it here today, sorry. If you want to buy these, feel free to message me with your paypal email, and I'll send you the invoice. If you just have comments, it's fine with me if you post them in public. /photo/1

"... they were used to polish the North Carolina star rubies her husband used to cut." So THAT'S what they are for! I always end up with odds & ends like those wheels when I buy lapidary equipment off craigslist from older folks. Never knew what they were for and never asked as they are usually in boxes full of other crap that I have no use for. At least now I will know what it is that I am throwing away! Someone that does that kinda stuff & polishing may have a use for 'em though. That bottom rock might be worth tumbling!

My Twitter page is where I read the news & share gossip & opinions, which you know how that is... we all have 'em! Although I do wish I could still just post the picture like I could the other day. Don't know why it works & other times it doesn't.

Looks like old jewelry polishing brushes and buffs. A Ruby is mohs 9, I can't imagine a ruby being polished or a final polish with rouge, tripoli or other polishing compounds.

Could be. He collected the stones, cabbed the stones, AND set the stones in gold or silver. I know that part to be correct because the widow also showed me some of the finished star ruby rings, including one she wore. Her knowledge of which tools were used when is what I'm not as sure of. He had a big Highland Park cabbing set up which I still use although I put in my own new diamond wheels. Since I've never used some of this side stuff, I need to sell or discard to make some room.

If you were referring to the two pieces in the picture with the Buffs, I suspect those are pieces of buffing compound blocks. Jewelers rouge ?

OK just as an FYI. Ruby and sapphire are polished with diamond. The above image is posted and sold by someone that does not know that. The above image is just as has been suggested. Buffs and bristle brushes with two pieces that look to be tripoli in a bar and a box that is marked "Gold Rouge". The "Gold Rouge" should be a bar of red rouge used to polish gold. In short these items are for metal finishing not stone finishing.

Thanks. She must have misunderstood what he used these pieces for. He must have used them when polishing the SETTING for the stone instead of the stone itself. I have some other silver polishing equipment such as a ring sizer, kiln, etc, I might just toss this stuff in the box when I sell all that. Will have to do that locally because of the weight of the kiln!
