I had a chance to cut a few rocks while I was visiting a friend. I'd been wanting to see what was in a big chunk of Burro Creek material that I got the last time I went there. The cuts revealed a bit of yellow druze/crap area that I had never seen in the stuff I got from Burro Creek area. Most of the yellow in the middle is porous and will most likely not take a polish but the rest looks good although they are more a light purple/gray color. Shown Wet A closer view of one of the slabs Even closer Any ideas as to what the yellow in it could be? It is crystalline but not crystals and very porous in spots.

Tommy have you seen any Burro Creek like this? Hi Diane I can't be sure but it reminds me of the purple-ish material that was pointed out to me as pastelite. The location I saw it at was right off the edge of the road in, east of the big creek crossing. I collected a couple of pieces of it but as you noted much of it was not lapidary grade in the middle. If I were more patient I'm sure I could have coaxed a few beautiful cabochons or tumbles from it as I'm sure you will be able to do with this piece.

This came from an area past the clay hills so probably the same type of Pastelite you collected. I just can't figure out what the yellow could be. I may be able to get a few cabs out of the slabs but a lot of the middle would take too much glue to make it usable. Thanks for the reply Tommy.

Sounds like it might be from around the same spot - there were definitely white clay looking hills nearby.

Hi Diane,
I think the yellow stuff is Saponite clay, very similar to the bentonite clay that is all over the area up there. I have cut several pieces that have the yellow crust on the edges that sometimes leads to the core. They usually become yard rock at that point.

you will find that yellow stuff in some of the agate that comes from the Area where they mine the kitty litter on the east side of the creek . I was told it was bentonite with a lot of sulfer in it

I never knew what type of clay was there but knew it was clay.
