Just wanting opinions on this. It is 1990's or earlier cut. Seller did not know, as it belonged to her Dad who passed away. Has been in the basement of an old house for many years. It was covered in dust, but I saw that it was Dino Bone and figured it was worth making an offer on. What would you have paid for it, if I may ask? Size reference is that it is on a 8.5" x 11" piece of paper. It is just under 1/4" thick. About 7.75" wide by 9.75" long. When I was looking at the photos it appears there are some opalized areas. 8-1 comments: Been researching this. Appears that there are current laws in Alberta that no dino bones may be transported from there, sold, traded, etc. Considering I do not know if this came from Alberta, should I be OK? Am curious what species it might have been, so will be researching what dino's were in Canada. Whoever cut this many years ago had great equipment. Other than a few naturally pitted areas, it is almost perfectly smooth on both sides. Thank you.

I am not up to speed on prices but that looks to be one fine piece of dino bone! I am guessing it is worth a fair bit of change... Great score.

Thanks. It is a material I have never had a slab of. Only a preform cab from a contest here. Wish I would have taken a photo before washing it, as it looked like a piece of brown rock. There must have been 1/16 inch of dust on it. Under the dust was cutting oil. A little Dawn dish soap did the trick. I am a little in awe at how nice it is.

Could anyone let me know if this is as nice as I think it is and approximate value? Might need the value for insurance, but only if over a certain amount.
Thanks.

That looks like a gorgeous piece of gembone, Beth!
Can't help you on price -- it's been a while since I've bought any bone, but I think you probably got a good deal! Buying dirty rocks sometimes really pays off.
As far as I know, there's no way to tell where piece of bone has come from and it's going to be near impossible to figure out which poor dino got agatized so beautifully. No matter, it's astounding that it even exists!

Doubt the Government even knows it exists, do with it what you want and keep quiet about it ! Don't advertise you have it and life will go smoothly !
You can check E-Bay to get a heads up on price that's current.

You can check E-Bay to get a heads up on price that's current. Checked Ebay sold. A similar one, but about 25% of size sold for a lot. Am I correct to just multiply the selling price by 4 to get an insurance estimate? Or are larger slabs worth more? The sold item had an almost identical structure and colors to what I have. I do not know as I have never been in this situation before. After doing the math, I find it unbelievable. I do not use or like Ebay for this reason. All it takes is one buyer who wants something and will pay whatever to get it. Some sellers even will accept payment from one person and then go with another person who offered higher. Never refund the money of the first person who paid after the auction closed. Been there many times. Doubt this slab is valued at over $200.00, lol. I found some similar ones, still at the 25% size or smaller on Etsy and various other web sites. They were all offered for $40.00 to $60.00. Sizes ranged from 2" by 2" to 1.5" by 3.5". Some stated 2 large cabs or several smaller ones could be obtained. As near as I can tell, this piece will yield over 20 standard size cabs, if I am careful. There will be some tumbling scrap. So, any advice anyone? Thanks

That IS a really nice gem bone. Maybe not as bright as a real gemmy one, but certainly very nice. With that size, I can easily see 200 for it, maybe more. Ya never know what someone is willing to spend. Just don't mention the Canadian part. Gem bone is getting hard to find since the feds banned collecting on fed land.

Thank you rockjunquie Was hoping you would respond. All I need is an insurance value for it, as I must itemize everything I have with a $50.00 or higher value. Since you confirmed what I thought the value was after cleaning it, I will say what I paid. Granted it was a mess with lots of dust. Something the seller discovered when she was loading the Lortone combo unit into her car to show me. I gave her $5.00 for it! She quickly accepted. I will be keeping this until I can get a cabbing machine and trim saw, or at least the combo unit mentioned above.

Yes, I would keep it for cabs, too. Can't say would insurance value would be on it. No idea. 5 bucks was a steal!

Now I feel a little bad, so after I get paid today, might just offer more than I was going to on the vintage Lortone combo unit she was selling. All depends on if the motor works or not, as the rest of the unit will require about $250.00 in work to get running.

Value will go up, NOT down. It might be a good idea to leave the slab in one piece and NOT entertain thoughts about cutting it up. Consider it an investment like a Government Bond. It's not costing you a cent to leave it whole as a display piece. If you absolutely HAVE to make a Bone cab, buy another piece !

It's not costing you a cent to leave it whole as a display piece. If you absolutely HAVE to make a Bone cab, buy another piece ! I had no idea I paid so little for such a valuable slab. All I was going on when purchasing was that it stated Dino bone from Canada and the sellers comments that it was her deceased Fathers that he purchased in the 1990's. Once I get the needed equipment to make a high quality cab or two, I want to cut off a small portion. It was basically a brown piece of rock heavily covered in dust, but with a tag stating what it was. Thanks to everyone here for your input on this. I really appreciate it. I set the value at $250.00 for the slab in my itemized list for insurance company.

agatemaggot has a point. That one is worth keeping whole. It truly is a diminishing commodity.
