I opened my shed this morning to let the cat out and check on my tumblers. When the door went up I heard a real bad noise coming from the tumbler area. I looked at each tumbler and this is what I found on the tumbler with my mex lace which I had put into 120/200 only three days ago... That tumbler was running dry.....looks like all night long too by the looks of the slurry on the floor. This is a pic of the mex lace I had in there...not a good pic but you can see what is left of my mex lace. Pho

Hey Pho, Those pieces of mexican lace still look much better than my good stuff. I'm sorry about your tumbler - that really sucks! Do you think the cat did it?

Looks like the rocks just rubbed a hole right in the center of that lid...lol..but I guess I could blame it on the cat....

Ah, the old "hole in the lid" problem. Bet it's a Thumblers, huh?
Apparently this is a problem with Thumblers lids. Somebody on the forum had the same thing happen and they repaired it. I remember seeing the pics they posted. I want to say it was Sands, but not sure about that. Anyway, maybe whoever it was will see this post and their repair thread will be revived. Or you could just buy a new lid.
The Mex Lace will survive, just have to toss it back in the tumbler and get it rolling again. I'm sure it didn't hurt it!
That's the pits though! And a big mess to clean up!

Bummer Pho. That's very weird, doesn't the Thumler's have an inner lid like the Lortone does?

That is a thumblers lid for sure- I keep an eye on mine as I have heard of this before! Man that sucks but the mex lace look like it will be OK- Thumblers even suggest that the lid should be replaced at the first sign of wear (hmmm guess I would be replacing the lid after every stage!- My problem with my Thumblers is that every time I open the lid then replace it (after cleaning up the rim and lid) it develops the tiniest leak- Just for a few minutes- I get on blop of slurry that dries in one spot- I'm thinking maybe an air burp? but I'm worried that the barrel is wearing funny or something

That's happened to me, and Thumblers has since modified the composition of the plastic they use in their lids. I just ordered a few from "Therockshed'. I was told you can expect that. If you keep an eye on the lid it you can usually replace it before it wears through. Sands recommended a small circle of plastic from a milk carton and some silicon as a patch I believe. Lids are only $2.00 for the 3# barrel. The same thing happens to the rubber lid on the 15# tumbler. I found some sheets of plastic a little thinner than cardboard and flexable, that I traced and drilled that I use in my 'Big Red' when it starts getting thin. So if you can see the light from a flashlight through the plastic lid on your 3# barrel, I'd say it's time to start looking for that replacement ;D

I had the same problem with my Thumlers lids. I bought some replacements and see that they have been redesigned. The new replacement lids I received are significantly thicker in the center where the wear occurs. I don't know about the material, but they look more durable.

Banjo, for the 15 lb Thumblers I found the rubber material at www.mcmaster.com/ really cheap. It cuts real easy for making new gaskets. If you go to the site look under "Raw materials and springs" in the lower right corner of the home page. Bob

I'm talking about the black rubber gaskets that the Model B's use. The kind of rubber that I ordered from them was Buna N, 1/16" thick. It's a lot cheaper than buying the pre-cut gaskets.

...and I don't think you have to worry about the rocks. They don't give a flip. Theyre just waiting to be put back in for some more fun. Some people tumble dry intentionally. I'm sure theyre fine cookie

Well it won't matter anyway...I have to shut down all my tumblers this wednesday anyway..I have to drive up to Montana. My brother in law up there is dying of cancer and has only a few days left we think so we are heading out early Thursday morning..do the 3 day drive. So when I get back I get to start all over again....the rocks will wait..

I had a similar problem with the lid gasket on a 15lb. barrel. I got some scraps from a rubber roof contractor and it worked ok. It was free, too.
