This is some agatized petrified wood I collected last summer. It requires a huge amount of culling before I start tumbling it to separate the good stuff from the bad -- too many of the raw pieces that I find fracture easily or have poorly agatized spots that won't polish, and this material has to be rejected, and frankly I find it kind of tough to throw away material that I worked so hard to find. But I did force myself to do the culling, and what's left over I'm very happy with. I take too many photos, so I'm going to put these pics up in two threads. This is the general shots of the whole batch, part 2 will be my favourites. A quarter is in some of the shots for scale. The recipe is: about 1 month in 60/90 7 days in 120/220 14 days in 500/600 10 days in aluminum oxide 1/2 day in pellets and ivory soap shavings This is the general batch: This is a bit closer: Closer.... Another angle up close: Thanks for looking!

Rollingstone- Awesome collection there. Good job. Culling? Can you please describe? thanks in advance, Gaetz Culling is sorting. Rollingstone sorted out the bad stuff so that only good stone was actually tumbled. No sense wasting time, grit, or wear-and-tear on the tumbler on material that won't polish.

Thanks for the compliments!
Gaetzchamp -- Toad's description of culling is exactly right. It's a definite learning process -- you don't want to throw out anything that will polish up nicely and has good patterns, but you don't want to waste your time polishing junk either. I've run batches of this petwood before, and each time I get a better idea of what to keep and what to reject. Ideally I'd leave all the junk in the field and just tumble the keepers, but I'll never reach that stage. I do leave a lot of stuff in the field, but I also run a lot of stones for a week or two in coarse to see whether they are shaping up and have nice patterns. If yes, I keep them going. If not, I replace them.
BTW, if anyone is wondering why some of these part 1 pics have a couple of water spots on them, it's because I took these photos outside just as some wet weather was moving in -- I finished the part 2 pics first, before the snow/rain, but these part 1 pics were taken just as the wet weather started to move in.

Mouthwatering....eyewatering.....just right for feeling in rockheaven haha.
Thanks Rollingstone. You did us proud. I love petwood and yes there are many pieces that chip or crack and I don't worry about the culling , what does not shape up , will sort itself out. The leftover pieces will still help the rest to be done right even if they do break down to crumbs .Sometimes there is only a cute little piece left over from a bigger chunk.

VaVaVOOM! Those are beautiful! I just love pet wood. Easy to tumble and all I have done has taken a great polish I love the patterns it produces.
