I am building a rock tumbler and plan on using lortone 2- 6lb and 1- 12lb barrels for now. Can someone tell me how far apart the rods should be from the center of one rod to the center of the other rod?
It would probably be the same as the measurement between the rods on a QT12 or QT66, but I don't have one to measure it and cannot find the scematics online
Thanks for the help

I may be mistaken but generally 3/4 the diameter of the barrel is a good starting point I believe. Mine are the 3lb lortone barrels (+-4"diameter) and my shafts are just over 3" from centers

How do you like your 3lb barrels? I was thinking of getting a few of those also.

Eh they are slow to grind. Just went with them bc I was able to pick up 4 of them for $10 a PC. But from all I've read on here the 6lb and 12lb do better job in coarse grind. Been planning on upgrading to cpl 6 lb or 12 lb barrels but I'm cheap so waiting to run across a deal before I switch.

My large base with about 1" OD (with hose) rods has them 6" apart, the standard Lortone base I also have has 3/8" steel rod, about 1/2inch with the plastic hose, and they're 5" apart. We can use the lined steel barrels and the Lortone 6 and 12 lb barrels on the big unit.

What is the hose on tbe rods for? Would electrical tape work?

What is the hose on tbe rods for? Would electrical tape work? I use automotive heater hose, it keeps the barrels from slipping on straight steel rods. Electrical tape wouldn't last through the first batch.

I had heater hose, then I switched to clear vinyl tubing, and now I have nothing, and there's not problem with slippage. I'm using Lortone barrels, which are rubber, so I think that's enough for grip. If I was using PVC barrels, I might need covers on my shafts. The covers weren't cheap and were a pain to put on, so I'd avoid them unless you find that you need them.

Wonder if ya roughed up the rods a bit if that spray on bed liner stuff would work.
Be easy enough to touch up the rods if it chipped off, but not worth the effort if it wouldn't last months before needing to be resprayed.

Not for me and I learned it from jamesp

I have never seen the need for anything on the rollers.

Slick PVC and HDPE barrels have no slippage on bare steel shafts in my experience IF YOU DRIVE both shafts. Neither does spacing of the shafts within reason IF YOU DRIVE both shafts. I spray clean entire rotary tumbler after clean outs with water and still don't have slippage.
Even when running sticky slurries with low rock fills(worst case scenario to cause slippage).
