Working on odds and ends First set is Montana, B grade Mary Ellen and a mystery jasper (square). Bottom row ready to be dopped. Second set Piranha, Montana and Morgan Hill. The Piranha and Morgan Hill are ready to dop. I had to start doming the Piranha to see where the pattern went and may adjust the shape as the dome is ground down. The pattern shifts front to back. The bottom poppy on the MH will probably disappear. It was a scrap I didn't even know I had. No matter how it turns out it will be a plus.

Looks like the potential for a lot of great cabs.

I usually like to wait until the next day to start cutting to give the superglue a chance to set but I wanted to see what happened to the poppy on the bottom. The good news was that it was still there. The bad news was that a big vugly appeared above it on the left side. I ground most of it away and the shape changed probably for the better. A wheel knocked it off the dop. It was a thick slab so I had a high girdle and I should be able to exorcise the vug. to be continued tomorrow..... through 80.

I am glad I am not the only one that puts a T on my stones for top.

I mark the top T and the bottom cut. I have on more than one occasion glued the dop to the top. For a long time I didn't use dops and on freeforms would forget which one was the top. With a dop choices are limited regarding what side to cut.

The Mary Ellen free form developed a vug line about 3mm in from the right side. I ground it down but now it is much smaller and needs a smaller dop. I haven't decided whether to keep working on it. Piranha Morgan Hill. Vug is a minor defect and some small fractures look healed after sanding and polishing Montana Mystery

There was a photo on the web of a rapidly melting iceberg. As I ground away one vug it kept moving toward the center. I have a better use for the dop stick This Mary Ellen is coming out better than I could imagine. Photographed through 220/280 soft and wet off the wheels. I had a piece of tumbled Morrisonite with weird edges. I put a shape on it and will dop it. Good values.

I think these are all coming along very nicely. It is interesting how you posted pictures of the slabs before you began working on them. This way we can see how far they have come already. I think that the Mary Ellen has a lot of character to it. You certainly have some great looking material there. Thanks for sharing!

I finished the preforms and two project cabs. Mary Ellen Montana Morrisonite Variscite. This one was from the project box. It was being recut as a fat pear but it had a bog blob of matrix at the lower left. I recut as a freeform.
