Not complete, but a concept I will be doing with another.
Would appreciate any advice.
In the 1970's Dutch Elm Disease caused all of the elm trees on the land I lived to die. A good friend took slices of the bases of some elms and made furniture from them. I have a beautiful, coffee table and a smaller, side table. The side table is about 2' wide. It has a satin finish.
My friend and I want to transform the side table into something more beautiful. This will be somewhat of a first for both of us. He has more woodworking experience than I do. i am well versed in rocks and use of polymer based sealants. I also know how to utilize glass table tops and add electric/battery lights.
So, we want to transform my table to include a slightly elevated, glass top that contains various rock slabs. Include a LED light strand on the outer edge of the slabs or slightly under them. The lights could be turned on and off.
The rock slabs would only be on the outer edge. That would leave about 1.25' of the elm top to show. The glass parts would be elevated from the elm top by about 2".
So, any advice? Any flaws in our thought process?
Thanks

Sorry, but the only thing I can add, as a lover of solid wood, is to leave it a wood table. You can go on Ikea and get a Lack table for 10.00 and take the top off to reveal a recess to do what you are talking about.

I like natural wood too. This small table was going to be left behind, but I decided it would be a good project. I have a much larger and better crafted one from the same tree. It is about 4' wide at most. The plan is to make a 2 tiered table. Metal rods would be secured along the edge of the wooden table. Small rock slabs would be secured to a layer of glass, but just along the edges. Another layer of glass on top of that. The glass table top would be positioned about 4-6" above the wood. The wood would still be very visible. The design was changed a little after I spoke my collaborator. We still want to have the LED lights in it. Here is the table. It is about 2.5' high. The top is about 4" thick. Sorry for the dust on it.

I’d dust it off, clean it up as necessary, and leave it be. The wood doesn’t need to be dollied up.
