No idea what this stone actually is. I found this one back in the spring of 2017 while searching the shores of Lake Huron with Jugglerguy. I have never seen one like it. I had been afraid to cut thinking the pattern and color might have just been on the surface. In the end all rocks must be cut though. Do you remember this one Rob? ever seen one like it on your hunts? Thanks for looking Chuck

I vaguely remember that. It sure turned out nice. I only wish more of the red went throughout the rock. I don’t remember ever seeing another one like that.

I do not remember which one of us found it. It was in the group shot of the rocks from the trip though. I only slabbed half of it. Need to glue it up and slab the rest. Chuck

Really nice cab and rock . Looks like a vesicular basalt , can't remember the name of the green crystals are though . Good lead. After looking at google photos it looks like vesicular basalt is mostly just the dark matrix full of pits and voids. That makes the information below make sense for how this one looks. "Amydaloidal basalt forms when a vesicular basalt allows water to circulate through it (i.e., it is permeable) and deposits secondary minerals in the voids. Secondary minerals include carbonates, silica and zeolites." www.mindat.org/photo-521565.htmlChuck

Vesicular has the empty holes .

There’s a lot of amygdaloidal basalt in the U.P., both in mine tailings and on the beaches, but I don’t think most of it is as nice rock. I was under the impression that most basalt does not shine up well, but this seemed to. Anyone have much experience working with basalt?

I have found amygdaloidal basalt on Lake huron before but they were mostly basalt with sparse minerals throughout. I have never found one completely filled like this. I thought Gowganda tillite was a basalt matrix? This one does not have an agate polish it is just a high satin finish. I tossed the cabbing scraps in the loto and they finished up last night. I have not really looked at them close but I know from some of the clean outs that the white quartz areas were undercutting. Chuck

Have tumbled a bunch of that and a high quality shine is pretty easy to achieve.
I know Chuck has cabbed some which I think were very nice.

The green spots might also be Chlorite which is very common in the area . But I would think should undercut worse than the quartz , which might be calcite . I have tumbled a fair amount of what I think is basalt . Pick a lot of the flat oval shaped ones on the beaches . Some get a semi gloss to gloss finish , others end up in the driveway . Seems the darker ones shine up better .
