Mostly for those who are new to sending/receiving packages via USPS.
I established a "safe zone" for packages to be dropped off if I am not home. Just need to call PO the day prior to delivery to authorize. This is important to me, as otherwise the package would be taken back to PO. I would have 5 days to pick it up before it would be returned to sender.
Can also arrange for a pick up from my "safe zone" for any packages I am mailing that will not fit in my mailbox.
If it is not busy, USPS employees will get boxes from my car when I am at PO.
I live in a rural area, so it might be different for those in urban areas. Not all PO's are the same, even in rural areas.
Today I called to authorize a package with a delivery date of tomorrow. Was told it arrived early today and was out for delivery. The Postmistress recognized my name immediately. Let me know the package would be delivered today. I will be home at the time of delivery.
I love most things about rural PO's. Do not love the limited hours some service desks are open. Mine is closed for about 4 hours in the middle of the day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I have arrived about 15 minutes prior to mid day closing and found them closed. Lesson learned.
Overall the service is great.

And who doesn't like shiny rocks ? I bribe the heck out of the mail delivery ladies with fridge magnets , keychains or whatever just to stay on good terms . Let them pick out the ones they like also . I'm sure it is no picnic to haul those 30 pound boxes of rocks out of the car and gently put them on my steps .

Let them pick out the ones they like also . I'm sure it is no picnic or part of their job description to haul those 30 pound boxes of rocks out of the car and gently put them on my steps . It's 100% part of their job description.

I stand corrected , edited my post . Point is , if you treat people decent you might get the same treatment in return .

There is a famous Mexican short story entitled Una Carta a Dios (a letter to god). I'll try to summarize it. A little farmer man came into the post office and requested a pencil and paper so he could write a letter. After a bit he returned to post a letter, and it was addressed to God. The Post Master was perplexed, what to do with a letter addressed to God. . . so he opened the letter and found that the man was asking God's help with the provision of 100 pesos because his crops had failed, his pig had died, and he needed money for seed to replant or sons would go hungry and his daughter would be forced into servitude or worse. The Postal official decided he needed to help so he contributed a few pesos, and collected a bit more from each of his employees. Together they managed to collect 84 pesos of the 100 requested. The money was placed in an envelope to await the return of the letter writer. When he came back he took the envelope, went away to open it, and eventually returned to ask for another loan of the pencil and paper to write another letter. Once he posted his letter, the post master was confronted with another letter to God. He opened it and found the man was thanking God for answering his request, but warning God to not use the post office next time because only 84 pesos of the 100 had arrived and everyone knew the employees of the post office were thieves. No good deed goes unpunished. The post office folks deserve our thanks.

Going to the post office isn't too bad for me. I occasionally have to go to the carrier annex which is a pain waiting for someone to come to the door. My mailman is great and we are very cordial. My mailbox is about 100 yards from my door and down and up a steep hill. When he is delivering, he brings packages to the door and also any mail with the packages. Others leave a package sitting on top of my mail box.
Fedex, Amazon and ontrac deliveries are a disaster and packages are frequently left at another house. My location is private and secure.

Enjoyed the Una Carta a Dios story. Still smiling. No good stone goes unpolished.
My home is on the side of a hill, so the delivery people have learned to leave boxes at the bottom of my stairs or by the garage rather than walk up (33 steps) to the house. I have never had a problem with theft. Welcome to Canada, eh?

fernwood When I saw the title the first thing I thought of was I am glad you are on good terms with your Parole Officer (PO). I guess I watch too many cop shows.

I have a lock box on my deck, big enough for boxes.... All postal services use it FedEx, UPS and USPS, they know my routines pretty well, if I'm not at home.... I also gift them, homemade sausages, jerky, smoked salmon and etc...
