I will be pretty bummed when I run out of this particular batch of Fordite rough. Might get about 10 more cabs from this rough. The very top layer of paint was the red dot in the center of two of the cabs. I lost the red dot at the polish wheel on the teardrop. Takes a pretty soft touch to completely make a cab without losing the very top color layer. Not the easiest shape to groove wrap cleanly. TIP: It helps if you dig the grooving blade deeper into the corners. Chuck

Way cool! I know how soft that material is and how hard it is not to blow past the color layers. Love the square one!

Do you know if that is actually Fordite? Could it be GMCite or Chryslerite or AMCite? This is a serious question. When you buy this stuff, does it generally come with a year or span of years and a particular factory name?

There was no history given on the material for these cabs. The 10 pounds I bought a few years back originally came from an auto parts manufacture that I am familiar with through my work. The company molds and paints exterior plastic parts for multiple OEM's. Could be Ford, Gm, Chrysler. The big three do not mold there own plastics so outside vendors mold and paint all of the front and back bumpers for them. There are several sellers that advertise Corvette paint. I would imagine those are accurate. Fiberglass can't be painted with the electrostatic process so there may still be paint racks getting coated in the Corvette plants.
Give it a few years and you may see Jeepite. Your wrangler model year and the new gladiator has interior plastic parts covering the roll bars and those are being painted.

I was under the impression that Fordite was no longer being made. You’re saying that it is still produced if the parts are plastic or fiberglass. That’s good, I’d hate to see such a cool material disappear.

That’s good, I’d hate to see such a cool material disappear. That is correct. The reason Fordite was supposed to be obsolete was that when the auto companies switched over to electrostatic paint there was longer any over spray build up on the racks. Over the last 10 years though most car and truck fascias (bumper covers) switched to plastic. The plastic parts are painted with conventional paint on racks that get coated with each pass. I posted a picture on here one time from one of my customers at my work that showed the bumper covers on the racks being painted at their facility. I just checked their website and could not find that picture again though. Chuck
