Here are some picts of my wood after 3 weeks. I've separated the good from the bad and have started another batch in coarse and will graduate the best of the 2 loads to the next stage. Please throw your comments my way. I'd really like to get a good batch!!! All picts are dry....should've thrown in some wet for color. Thanks in advance for your tips. Lookin' good, you've got some nice patterns and colours there! What's the source of the petrified wood?

wow, nice stuff there, love the stripey one in the first pic. i've really come to appreciate pet wood more these days. can't wait to start a batch of Banjo's i got this week.
i think you are on the right track, Gaeter, my only suggestion is that if those are external fractures instead of internal ones (hard to tell from the photos) is to run them in a borax wash a few hours between cycles.
othe than that, you are gonna have one killer batch!

KD-
I've ran them in Borax for 48 hours. The white lines are very interesting to me in that they're not even perceptible to the touch. If I had a blindfold on, and felt them, I would not even know they were there. Since I've never done a batch of petrified wood before, I was wondering if this was a trait of the wood itself or if was introduced in the tumbling process??? Some of the lines are white veins of quartzy stuff others are just white lines in the rock.
Thanks,
Gaetz

Nice looking stuff Gaetz and that's ok that you didn't do them wet. It's easier to see how they are actually coming along in the stage, rather than seeing how they are going to look later. And on that note, it looks to me like they are coming along really nice. You are going to have an awesome load when they are done.

Hey Gaetzchamp,
WOW ... nice looking Petrified Wood ... that ought to finish out gorgeously!
The white lines (unless they are part of the pattern of the wood grain) are most probably silica bands that filled various breaks in the decaying wood as it was being replaced with ? (depending on what kind of wood you have ...ie; jasperized, agatized, opalized, etc.).
As the minerals/silica from the soil started to replace the actual wood grains from the decaying wood and as the wood continued to decay ... there were small breaks or bands that sometimes have no definite pattern at all. The silica filled in the smaller breaks (or the lines you are seeing ...) and they appear as white lines or as crystaline bands within the wood grain. If you get a 10X loupe magnifying glass and take a close look at the white lines ... you will most probably see where this process has happened ... in a whole lot better details!
I love petrified wood like that ... it adds so much charachter to the finished pieces.
Enjoy and definitely keep us up to date with the progress of this batch!

Thanks for the informative description. I think that is whats going on here. I'll have to find an eyepiece and see this for myself.

Nice work Gaetz,
I love seeing all the different forms of PW. I would not have known that as wood by myself. csroc

Nice wood. I wish mine would look like that. They were in course for 3 weeks and they look like they havent even been touched. They have red slurry so I know its tumbling, but they still look like I just broke them off. Can anyone tell me what I should do?
thanks momma
