Hopefully this is the right place to post this, but can someone give me advice on using stainless steel shot and glass together?
Alright, I've tumbled jewelry in my tumbler with stainless steel shot quite a lot before, and the results have been amazing. However, I recently got a used silver ring with a glass checker-cut gem in it, and I'm wondering if I can tumble that in the shot, since I have never tried it with glass before. Would the shot scratch my glass? I'm not exactly sure what the hardness of stainless steel is, but I know silver is softer, and I've never had an issue with it scratching that before, so I'm wondering if it would be similar to glass. I also tried a scratch test on a glass bead, and the shot didn't scratch it, so I assume it would be safe to put the ring in, but I'd still like to know if anybody has experience with this.
Thanks!

Glass is is like the natural glass obsidan. I have tumbled jewelry with obsidian before. I used a lot of plastic pellets to soften the roll. I offer no guarantees that it will work for you, but it did for me.

If it were me, I wouldn't risk it. Since the glass is faceted, it will have very thin spots where the facets meet to make that checkerboard pattern. Those are going to be prone to chipping easily. Better would be to get some dry polishing media like Vibra Dry from Diamond Pacific. It works great and you don't need to worry about anything chipping or scratching.

I use stainless steel shot with sterling and Swarovski crystal beads many times. Excellent results.
