Here's pics out a batch out of Tripoli and 1000 for comparison. They each ran 12 days in the respective prepolish. Tripoli - this has a nice shine on it already. I moved it to the vibe in the generic polish I got from our local rock shop 1000 - this is dull and flat. It has gone into the same polish as the others except in the rotary. This next pic is of some of the pet wood I got from Banjo. It has been in 60/90 since 3/05. I imagine if I would have recharged after a week, it would be further along, but I just had to many things going on and haven't checked barrels since then. This stuff is gonna be NICE when finished. The green rocks in with it are my emeralds I tossed in there. After this run the emeralds should be ready to go to 220.

Looks just like mine when it comes out of the 1000 grit, going to have a really nice shine when it's done in polish. Some really nice colors in those stones ... good job!!

Llana, I like Tripoli as well and have been using it for quite a while on most rocks. I have to ask why you go through all of the stages except polish in your rotary? Why not just rough in the rotary and pre and polish in the vibe? It saves a lot on grit costs. Tom

That is what I usually do, but I wanted to run this little experiment and wanted both batches to come out at the same time so I could photograph them together. And at the time I put these in prepolish I had stuff in 220 in the vibe.

Very nice looking stones, and a great experiment you are running. It will be very interesting to see how they compare after polish. Right now it obviously looks like the trip. is winning, but I guess there is the possibility that the 1000 has been better at getting out the scratches leftover from 500 grit (or whatever pre-polish you used) whereas the trip. is too fine so left some scratches behind. In that case, the 1000 could still come out ahead after final polish (if I made any sense with that?).
While on the topic of experiments, I recently read from another source (not RTH) about a test someone had done to compare coarse grind with and without grit. The idea being that stones will wear just by rolling against each other, so how much role did adding silicon carbide grit play? They concluded that rocks did smooth out in coarse grind without using any grit, but the process was about four times faster when grit was added. That's my rambling for today.

I did this little experiment because someonea few weeks ago asked which one worked better as a pre-polish. I really won't be able to determine which one works better, or even if one does work better until the stones are out of polish.
Will post pics when they are out of polish. The ones done in tripoli will be out of polish in a couple of days cause they are in the vibe. Will be next week before the 1000 ones are out.

llana, tks for the comparison. I've never used tripoli but find the 1000ao so good for softer rocks that I'm starting to use it for my hard agates. I'm going to need some lessons in rock id. Pet and agate can even look the same to me! tks csroc

That is why I use both 1000 and tripoli. I just think it is too big of a jump from 500 to polish. Tami
