I haven't driven by there for a while but there were a lot of sculptures made from drift wood and other found materials at the Emeryville, CA mud flats.

I agree that normally I wouldn't care were it just an isolated stack, but when it starts spoiling the spot for those who come there to admire natural beauty, I can see where that could be a problem for other visitors. Out in the desert, those stacks can persist for decades, and even on streambanks and coastlines, they'll be there until at least the next storm. I liked the method used by creative guy in the story who stacks, photographs and then knocks them over - nice all-around compromise.

I've seen rockstacking around for a while, but it seems it is becoming more popular. I see rock stacks all over now. The desert... Edit to add one more. This from Memorial Day weekend this year. Location is SE Cali, north of Yuma along the Colorado River. They are everywhere. Downtown San Diego on the bayfront Never really thought about it one way or another. But when it is excessive, it is like graffiti. Piles of rocks randomly stacked along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Door County, Wisconsin. I consider this excessive: Do some people think this is more appealing than the way Mother Nature intended it? Don't think so! Guess some people just feel the need to have to muck things up, put their own stamp on the environment. It is doubly appalling when these folks wreak their havoc in beautiful places such as Zion and other national parks. It's criminal! Enough already!

Along some WI Great Lakes shores there are signs posted not to stack rocks.

I'm not sure I have a feeling about them one way or the other. I guess I would just feel compelled to knock them over for the hell of it. But, that's just me. I have seen some really cool pix of them, though, and appreciate the difficulty of making some of them.
