An intruder came into my daughter's house this morning at like 12:30am. He was in there with a flashlight. He shone it upstairs and awoke my son in law AND their pony sized Great Pyrenees mix with territorial issues. Flethcher was down the stairs and on the guy's ass! He is an intimidating dog. All his hackles were up and he was going off. She lives in a moderate-high crime area in Norfolk. True, she didn't have her back door locked, but the only way in was to jump the privacy fence and they do have Fletcher. So, she always felt pretty safe there. Her son, my grandson, was sleeping on the livingroom couch, where the guy was. I know he saw him. The guy had such balls to be in there, no telling what would have happened had my grandson woken up. So, I say once again- Thank God for big dogs! Needless to say, she is also shopping for a weapon. My daughter has smaller hands than even I do. I recommended a Bersa 380 with safety rounds. I know everyone has their favs, but for me it is good.

Glad all are safe. Was the intruder apprehended with minimal physical damage by Fletcher? Or did Fletcher let him have it?
I love my Sierra as she looks like a wolf to many. Potential robbers are intimidated by her, as she has a good read on people and why they are at my place. Would lick most to death or cause minor injuries by tail wags. But if someone comes on property with the intent of doing harm, she is very different. Her protective wolf heritage comes back. She knows to protect me, the horses at all costs. And. gladly does it. She knows she will be rewarded by me.

Fletcher stopped at the door as the guy ran out. Which is good. He could really hurt someone. Once they are out the yard, they are no longer a threat.
Update- One of her cats ran out with the doors open. Can't find her (Yet).

I know everyone has their favs, but for me it is good. Glad to hear the BIG DOG did his job.......and nobody was harmed, this time..! We live in a rural area with lots of open space and a small village (trailer park) next door........needless to say, a BIG DOG (we have two 80-90 lbr's) make for a good set of alarms and warning system.....also have a camera rig in two locations of potential access where flood lights can't cover so well. Even with all that we still get an occasional brainless "tweeker" or "migrant" climbing fences as a short-cut through the open spaces on both sides of us........my dogs will not actually take a bite out of people, so far, knock on wood (only other animals), but they're big enough to keep idiots at bay until I can respond, if I'm home....! I won't make this response a handgun debate........but I own both the popular Bersa Firestorm .380 and a Ruger LC380 .380 (and a few others) due to my CCW and other certs. It's only my humble opinion and my wife's personal experiences, but bang for the buck, reliability with various types of .380 ammo and accuracy/comfort at btw. 10' to 20', the Ruger is our small caliber favorite........of course, the night stand (dresser drawer) has the go to 9mm.........just a thought.

Glad she and the family are ok. Mine isn't a big dog but most people think she is when they hear her bark so I'm sure it psychs some people out. She's not tiny but not big either.

rockjunquie I know it costs more but she should try a Sig P238, the 9mm version (P938) I've tried is way more controllable than anything else I've tried, even significantly larger frames. If it's possible out your way get her into a range with rental handguns and an instructor to help her find the best fit.

Truthfully, I was thinking that but figured I should reply in a more PG rated manner. (Actually was thinking I wished the dog had gone all Lorena Bobbitt on him.)

Glad the dog was enough. I prefer Glock--no d@#^ safety levers to think about when the only thing you want is the trigger... Rockoonz is absolutely right in his recommendation.

Glad nobody got hurt, including/especially the dog. The loser won't be back...probably could have found him afterwards at the coin laundry washing his pants.

Trouble is, when it comes to people getting shredded by dogs, the ratio of scumbags that deserve it to innocent bystanders is not good.

I'm glad everything turned out OK! The balls on some people to just come on in like that - they are lucky to still be alive.
We sleep in an upstairs bedroom with two Belgian Malinois and a Baretta 92 9mm about a foot away from me so I always wonder how that would go if someone broke in. Big Charley (from my avatar picture) at 100 lbs has never bitten anyone or done bite work - and we've raised him from a pup so we know his history as opposed to Roxie who we adopted at around 1 year old and someone at some point treated her harshly. One time several years ago at the old house my son needed to stop over to sleep at our house at 11PM and when the back gate opened what unfolded was unreal. Charley who was younger then, at first raised a huge ruckus which should have scared away anyone in their right mind - and by that point we were on the back patio and when my son came around the corner in the dark the dog went into a down low crouch and teeth baring growling barking snarl that still gives me chills when I think about it. My son nearly pissed himself of course - he thought he could just walk in and say hi because he and Charley are best friends. Charley is a few years older now and having a lot of physical problems with his hips and knees but he is every bit as protective as he was back then if not more. That dog would die for us without hesitation.

My sister's single friend got broken into when she was not at home at mid-town Atlanta. When she returned she found blood all over her front door and porch. It was decided that the perpetrator had used the front door to peel her pit bull off of himself lol. There was a lot of blood in her home and a much disrupted interior. That dog was always unusually quiet, friendly and rarely barked. Obviously territorial ! If only she had a security video running. So satisfying. Thankfully the dog was not hurt.

That's probably just what she'll do.

There is a company in our area that will send a guy in a dog training suit to your house and try to break in to see just what your dog will do. Interesting business.
My brother in law decided to sneak into his house to see what his dog would do. He got to see a whole new side of him. Scared the crap out of him until Floyd saw that it was him.
