I still have slabs but nothing I want to work on. I'm not interested in making another 'ok' cab. Out of my wife's stash of material I ran across this material: All the same and the baggie was labeled 'Black Sky turquoise Blue Orbs - China'. Searching on that id was of no use. Even adding lapidary to the search was no help. Turquoise was a color not a stone I found similar material on Etsy as black turquoise from China. I have enough for 2-3 cabs and will play with it. Does anyone have an id?

Looks like Cloud Mountain to me.

From what I looked at:'cloud mountain-spiderweb-Hubei'. I guess 15 years ago the name was 'Black Sky'. No mention of stabilization on the baggie and it seems dense and solid. I'll make a freeform with the smaller piece.

Sounds like time to sell some slabs. People will probably buy them from your store just like they buy your cabs.

I'm not looking for cabs to sell. I have hundreds I could list from 15 years of work. Buyers are looking for exceptional material; slabs and cabs. I have very little exceptional material remaining but I enjoy making cabs. I have nice slabs, but the demand isn't that high and turning the material into nice cabs that won't sell for much.

My comment was that you could sell the slabs. If you're really not interested in cutting them, sell the slabs and buy something you'd enjoy cutting.

Believe it or not, it is easier to sell what I have than buy really good material. There isn't a lot of it and it is priced high. The golden age of buying is past; great material on auction. Deals to be had. I do a lot of looking now and not much buying. I have some 'nice' Morrisonite that I could sell and it would be difficult to replace it for what I sold mine for. Buyers want exceptional material and there isn't much of it.

Yeah, they want top-grade - and don't want to pay the price. We also run up against that with opals. People want to buy good Aussie opals for the price of synthetics they see at big-box stores.
We're in the same position as you in that way. Can't replace it for what most people want to pay.

We're in the same position as you in that way. Can't replace it for what most people want to pay. I know virtually nothing about opals. When I joined here some members posted the Koroit cabochons and I liked them a lot. I started looking for rough and I couldn't justify the cost. I ended up buying a FRB and the material wasn't any good, but I did get a chance to work with it. What I see cost of the material and what the cabs sell for on Etsy, I would be better off buying cabs and recutting them. I am generally priced out buying top grade material. Occasionally, I get lucky.
